Prince of Persia Remake in 'Conception' Phase, Won't Be at Ubisoft Forward

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake has been rebooted again and is now in its conception phase. Furthermore, the game will not be shown at the upcoming Ubisoft Forward event on June 12 and there are no plans to remake any other game in the series.

Ubisoft provided an update about its Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake project since it was moved over to its Montreal studio from its Pune and Mumbai studios in India last year. “In terms of the development stage, we're in conception right now. Since we took over the project, we've been looking at feedback from the community and finding our own way of delivering the game,” explained Ubisoft producer Jean-Francois Naud in an interview posted to Ubisoft's blog.

He continued, “Now, we're building up the team, defining the priorities, putting prototypes together, testing elements, and looking at how we can include community feedback in the development as well. It’s still in an early stage, and players should not expect to hear more about the game this year, but rest assured that we’re all putting our strengths and heart into this project.”

Game director Michael McIntyre also explained how the game needs to be a remake rather than a remaster because it’s been 20 years since the original was released. Technology and tastes have changed since then. “I do not think a remaster would take enough of those evolutions into account; I think you need to do a remake in order to truly evolve the game to meet a modern context,” he said.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake was first announced back in September 2020 and was even available for preorder. However, it has suffered long delays since then. In 2022, the game was being delisted from retailers, inciting worries that it was going to be canceled. Ubisoft clarified that development moved to the Montreal studio and the game was simply being delayed again.

Then, Ubisoft started to refund pre-orders for the game but reiterated that it wasn’t being canceled. Now, Ubisoft’s latest update confirms that the game’s development is starting over once again in the conception phase.
