Highguard, the free-to-play PvP raid shooter announced at The Game Awards last year and set to close next week, has released its final update. Developer Wildlight announced that it would permanently shut down Highguard on March 12, but not before a "farewell tour," which also just-so-happens to be the name of the shooter's final patch. Highguard launched on January 26 after almost no communication with prospective players between its December announcement and launch day. While Steam concurrents almost hit a high of 100,000, peak concurrents on Valve's platform soon plummeted (neither Sony nor Microsoft make player numbers public). And though Wildgate was quick to address issues with the game, even adding a 5v5 game mode to counter 3v3...
This article contains spoilers for Resident Evil Requiem. Resident Evil Requiem is now in our hands and, as our review makes clear, it’s a massive success. But what’s next for Capcom’s long-running horror series? Resident Evil has settled into a release cadence over the last few years that alternates between new mainline entries and extravagant remakes. With the most recent remake being an overhaul of Leon S. Kennedy’s iconic Spain-set adventure, Resident Evil 4, the next one up on the docket is likely to be Chris Redfield’s co-op odyssey, Resident Evil 5. That would be interesting for many reasons, but to make matters more intriguing, one of Resident Evil Requiem’s third act plot reveals seems to hint at the ways Capcom intends to...
Warning! Resident Evil Requiem spoilers follow: If you’ve spent any time in Resident Evil Requiem’s Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center, you know to steer absolutely clear of “the chef." A towering, burly, machete-wielding shambler, he’s the toughest “regular” zombie Grace can face in Requiem’s terrifying first half. The only way to take him down is to stock up on bullets, Hemolytic Injectors, and a whole lot of courage. Or just get one of the noise-sensitive zombies to one-shot him. As you’ll probably already know, there are a number of different zombie types or “characters” in Rhodes Hill. Among them are audio-sensitive patients who will lash out at anything that makes too much noise. If you’ve unlocked the Internal Dispute trophy...
Bungie has finally revealed Marathon’s premium currency, called LUX, while promising it can’t be used to buy gameplay advantages. In a tweet, the official Marathon account reiterated that seasonal gameplay content is free for all players. This includes zones and Runner shells (playable characters) for the extraction shooter. “There is no pay for power,” Bungie said. Premium Pass rewards only include cosmetics, not gameplay items. And LUX can only be used for cosmetics, “not gameplay advantages.” Meanwhile, Reward Passes do not expire, so you can buy a previous season’s Reward Passes. You unlock rewards in your Rewards Passes using Silk, which is earned by playing the game. You can’t buy SILK. You can also earn cosmetics via the...
Castlevania: Belmont's Curse — announced at Sony's State of Play showcase last month as part of Konami's celebration of Castlevania's 40th(!) anniversary — will play like a classic Castlevania game rather than a roguelike, despite the expertise of the studio making it. That's according to Konami, which told The Verge earlier this week that while the game is in development by Dead Cells maker Motion Twin, it will play like a traditional Castlevania game. "Castlevania Belmont's Curse is a 2D action-exploration game where players can freely explore vast, elaborately crafted maps," Konami's Tommy Williams said. "It is not a roguelike or roguelite game." As for why Konami's making this clear now? Well, the announcement trailer did leave...
Crimson Desert is almost upon us, and we’re now getting a sense of what it is all about and how, exactly, this ambitious open world action adventure works. IGN’s recent Crimson Desert preview, for example, is packed with fresh details, and we even have a big interview with one of the developers. But one talking point that has emerged over the last day is Crimson Desert’s ‘fast forward’ button, which lets you speed through dialogue — and it turns out there are plenty of people who have a lot to say about it. X / Twitter user Jake Lucky posted footage of fast forward in action, showing how it speeds up dialogue in cutscenes in a tweet viewed over 1.1 million times. “One of the features I really liked in Crimson Desert is you can fast...
The current CEO of Build A Rocket Boy, Mark Gerhard, has announced further layoffs at the struggling UK development studio following the disastrous release of MindsEye, while doubling down on “organised espionage and corporate sabotage” claims. In July last year, IGN reported that Edinburgh-based BARB had issued at-risk of redundancy emails to its around 300-strong UK workforce after MindsEye flopped at release. Soon after MindsEye came out, BARB said it was “heartbroken” over the issues players had faced with the game, and promised to release a series of patches to fix the significant performance problems, glitches, and AI behavior bugs. Story-driven action adventure game MindsEye was initially designed to be a part of Everywhere...
Ubisoft has just released the first piece of concept art for Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced, finally confirming its long-awaited remake that has been rumored for years. The company included the image in a blog post that offers more detail on the blockbuster franchise's future — including word that post-launch support for Assassin's Creed Shadows was being wound down. Ubisoft's focus is now firmly on the future, though the series' next all-new entry Assassin's Creed: Codename Hexe sounds like it's still some way off. In the meantime, then, Ubisoft has at last begun acknowledging its upcoming Assassin's Creed: Black Flag remake, which is expected to arrive at some point later this year. "Speculation around Assassin's Creed is...
Ubisoft has detailed its plans for the future of Assassin's Creed, and said it is already winding down support for last year's Assassin's Creed Shadows. Later this month, Assassin's Creed Shadows will celebrate its first anniversary — but it sounds like a muted affair, with a community livestream, a competition, and not a lot else. Today's update from the new Assassin's Creed leadership team makes it clear that Shadows will not receive any major new content additions in future, following earlier confirmation that there would be no second expansion similar to last fall's Claws of Awaji. It's a disappointing end for Shadows, which has limped to the end of its first year of post-launch support and offered fans only a fraction of the...
Like Cuphead before it, I am pleased to report that, as it turns out, Mouse: P.I. for Hire isn’t just all sizzle. There is plenty of steak there too. Just as Cuphead built an incredibly good bullet-hell, boss-rush shooter underneath its hand-drawn, hand-animated exterior, so too – at least, based on what I’ve played so far – is Mouse underpinning its 1930’s-era, black-and-white, rubberhose-animated facade with a mechanically sound first-person shooter. In fact, while its own developers have referred to it in conversations and interviews with me as a boomer shooter, I’d argue they might be selling their creation a little short: there’s a lot more going on in its campaign than I thought. The end result is an action game that seems like...

If you played the Marathon server slam, you might have found Bungie’s extraction shooter a challenging experience. It’s designed to be a “dangerous climb,” as the developer behind Halo and Destiny calls it, but Marathon’s difficulty curve can be overcome. Part of the challenge comes from the very nature of Marathon as an extraction shooter. If you die, you lose all your gear. And not just what you looted while out on the battlefield, but what you brought in. And given how easy it is to die in Marathon, at least as it was in the Server Slam when players were just getting started, it could feel like a brutally punishing video game. Could people bounce off Marathon because of this? Could some find its steep learning curve too hard of a...
RPGs don't always require compelling stories or innovative trappings to be fun. Sometimes, all you want or want are a few engaging systems, some brought colors, and a delightful loop of grinding, exploration, and reward. Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection seems to deliver all that in spades based on what I’ve played so far, matching a fairly innocuous, almost infantile narrative with well-tuned mechanics to create something thoroughly enjoyable in the early going. The three Star Force games included in this collection don't even try to hide the influence Pokemon clearly had on their design. All three are split into multiple versions clearly inspired by ye olde Blue and Red. A total of seven variants exist across the trilogy, and...
Resident Evil: Requiem is the first in the horror franchise to be released solely for current-generation consoles, but what really makes it special is the engine that runs it. The RE Engine was built initially for Resident Evil 7, and Capcom has since used it to power everything from Monster Hunter: Wilds to Exoprimal – remember that one? But while the engine has had issues in open-world games, it’s still incredible for the franchise it was created for. As a result, Resident Evil Requiem looks exquisite on the PS5, and runs smoothly no matter which version of the platform you’re using. I was particularly interested to see how the first Resident Evil game designed first and foremost for the current generation of consoles would perform...
A new report has revealed that both Ghost of Yotei and Saros will remain exclusive to PlayStation 5 as Sony begins to pull back from PC. Bloomberg said that while Sony will continue to release online games on PC, single-player games will now remain console exclusive, marking a significant strategy shift. Sony had a strategy of releasing its PlayStation games on PC some time after they hit console. This new policy marks a return to console exclusivity at a time when console rival Microsoft is all-in on multiplatform. So, expect to see fighting game Marvel Tokon on PC as well as PS5, and of course Bungie’s extraction shooter Marathon remains a multiplatform release. Meanwhile, the Sony-published but externally developed Death Stranding 2...
Ever since its reveal in 2019, Pearl Abyss' Crimson Desert has garnered a certain mystique for its ambitious open world and the multitude of activities waiting to be uncovered. It's a type of open-world action-adventure that's aiming high and looking to land among other AAA games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Witcher 3. However, this mystique has also attracted some skepticism about whether the game will deliver on its vision of a grand-scale action game that pulls you into its world. Fortunately, we recently got several hours of hands-on time with Crimson Desert, and the ambitious open-world game is well-positioned to deliver on its lofty goal of being a captivating action game. However, that skepticism from...
Jackbox Games, the game developer known for its annual party packs of phone-controlled party games that even your non-gamer friends enjoy, is lengthening its reach today with the announcement that it's going into indie publishing as well. Its first published game? My Arms Are Longer Now, from Melbourne-based Toot Games. It's another big step for the party pack purveyor, and another indication that the company is starting to break out of its comfort zone. Speaking to CEO Mike Bilder at DICE Summit last month, he tells me that the company experienced "explosive growth" during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. It wasn't just revenue: between Zoom happy hours, families playing remotely, and live streams, more and more individuals...
The reveal trailer for Control Resonant, the sequel to IGN’s 2019 Game of the Year, made a few things clear right off the bat. First, we wouldn’t be playing as Jesse Faden anymore, but rather her brother, Dylan. Second, we’d no longer be confined to the Brutalist architecture of The Oldest House. Instead, we’d be trying to navigate our way through a Manhattan that had literally folded up on itself, Inception-style, as a result of The Hiss getting out. And third, Dylan isn’t wielding Jesse’s badass transforming Service Weapon, or even one similar to it. Instead, he’s got his own badass transforming weapon: the Aberrant, a massive hammer that brings combat into much closer quarters than before. Remedy showed off a bit of proper gameplay...
Every once in a while, a particularly ambitious game comes along and immediately hooks the audience. In Crimson Desert’s case, showing a grand-scale world that recalls elements of Breath of the Wild and The Witcher 3 quickly garnered a mystique for its ridiculously over-the-top ambitions for a new open-world action game. However, since its reveal back in 2019, it's taken a long time to get a clearer picture of how the ambitions driving Crimson Desert have taken shape. And now, in 2026, it's garnered some healthy skepticism, leading many to feel it might be one of those games that's just too good to be true. Thankfully, with the now-firm March 19 release date fast approaching, I got some extended hands-on time with developer Pearl...

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive — known to most as CS:GO — is back on Steam in its own right… but only if you know where to look. Counter-Strike 2 regularly tops Steam's Most Played games list (for example, it hit a peak of 1.3 million players just in the last 24 hours alone). Its predecessor, however, was well-loved, too, yet it was effectively nuked when its home on Steam was replaced as Counter-Strike 2 dropped in 2023. That meant that if you'd wanted to play CS:GO before this update, you would've had to dig into the game's legacy branch via Steam and access it from there. A stinging caveat is that the servers have not been resurrected, nor is there any matchmaking, which means you can only play against the bots available to you...
Grammy Award-winning rap star Ice T is struggling with Resident Evil Requiem's spider. A day after IGN reported that Resident Evil Requiem was causing widespread problems for those who suffer from arachnophobia, the rapper and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit actor has admitted he too is having issues. "Resident Evil 9… F*** that Spider 🕷️," Ice T wrote on social media last night, presumably after encountering the game's arachnid boss for himself. Previously, Ice T had said that he'd been enjoying what he'd played of Resident Evil Requiem so far. "I've been playing Resident Evil 9," he wrote over the weekend. "Reminds me of the 1st one. Has me stressed the F out… Lol You know it's bad when you have Dreams about the s***! lol...
President Trump's administration is currently debating whether to allow Chinese megacorp Tencent's stakes in major U.S. companies such as Fortnite maker Epic Games and League of Legends developer Riot Games to continue. The FT reports that "top officials" have met to assess the security risk of Tencent's investments in numerous U.S. and Finnish gaming firms ahead of President Trump's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping next month. Tencent has been acquiring western game companies for well over a decade now, but its most high-profile investments include a 28% stake in Epic Games, which is based in North Calorina, and the wholly owned Riot Games, which is based in Los Angeles. It also wholly owns Finnish company Supercell, which...
Great news: Resident Evil Requiem absolutely kicks ass. While it was initially advertised as a survival horror vehicle for new protagonist Grace Ashcroft, it turns out Requiem is equally a reunion with the series’ fan favorite hero, Leon S. Kennedy. Despite showing up in several remakes recently, Leon hasn’t had a genuinely new adventure since Resident Evil 6. That was 14 years ago! Requiem brings us a Leon who’s still that campy, quippy, tough-as-nails legend we’ve always loved, but now he’s older, wiser, and carrying a bit more baggage with him. This kind of return is pretty uncommon in video games, but take a look at the screenings at your local multiplex and you’ll see it’s happening all the time now in movies. Old heroes from old...
Resident Evil Requiem voice actor Nick Apostolides has said that "half the fans would want to hang me" if he picked a side between Leon S. Kennedy's main love interests. Warning! Spoilers for Resident Evil Requiem follow: The question, asked by PC Gamer, follows Requiem's revelation that Leon is seemingly married. Concept art for Leon wearing a wedding band can be unlocked within Requiem, while its ending appears to show the grizzled agent putting his ring back on, having kept it in a pocket for safe keeping. Now, Apostolides has been asked what he'd like Leon to do next after the events of Requiem ("settle down for once") and whether he'd like Leon to settle down with long-term love interest Ada Wong, specifically. "I would just...
Will Powers, the public face of Crimson Desert in the west, has hit out at people accusing developer and publisher Pearl Abyss of “hiding” console footage of the hotly anticipated open-world action adventure game, and promised reveals are coming ahead of its release date. Pearl Abyss has yet to confirm base performance figures for Crimson Desert on consoles, leaving PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S owners wondering how it will perform on their platforms. With the disastrous release of Cyberpunk 2077 still fresh in the memory, and the backlash developer CD Projekt suffered by not showing off the game on last-gen consoles ahead of launch, some have expressed concern that Crimson Desert might struggle on PlayStation and Xbox, and so...
Following numerous delays, Bungie's Marathon is almost here, releasing on PC (via Steam), PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on March 5 after a successful "Server Slam" beta test over the weekend. It's Bungie's first new game since it released Destiny 2 in 2018. A PvP-focused extraction shooter set on the mysterious planet of Tau Ceti IV, Marathon sees players inhabit the bodies of Runners, cybernetic mercenaries who have been designed to survive the planet’s harsh environments, exploring the lost colony that once inhabited Tau Ceti’s surface. In our Marathon review-in-progress, we wrote: "The Server Slam alone doesn’t paint a full picture, but working my way to character rank 30 was a really promising glimpse at the first stretch of...
Activision has demanded a prominent Call of Duty leaker stop releasing confidential information about the series, insisting that even when leaks are wrong they cause problems. X / Twitter account @TheGhostOfHope is well known in the Call of Duty community for leaks, and has been doing so for some time. Just last month, Hope claimed that “sources” had indicated that an apparent delay of the next Xbox had “hurt” Call of Duty marketing plans, as Activision apparently wanted Modern Warfare 4 to be a launch title and compete with GTA 6. “Because of this delay, the idea of two Call of Duty games launching with the next Xbox has been floated,” Hope continued. “A traditional Call of Duty multiplayer and a standalone Zombies title, presumably...
Resident Evil Requiem has sold 5 million copies in just five days, and is another hit for publisher Capcom. This morning, a press release stated that the company's new Resident Evil blockbuster had already passed the sales milestone following a hugely successful launch weekend. Requiem's launch appears to be the biggest in recent franchise history — hitting 5 million sales faster than Resident Evil Village, and the remakes of Resi 2 and Resi 4. Early indications had suggested Requiem was landing well, with a peak of more than 344,000 concurrent players on Steam over the weekend — a series record — plus an extremely positive response from fans and critics alike. (IGN's Resident Evil Requiem review rated the game as 9/10). In its...
Wildlight has announced that it will be permanently shutting down Highguard on March 12. Before then, it will release one final update that adds a new Warden, a new weapon, account level progression, and skill trees for those who want to get their final matches in. Wildlight shared the news on X/Twitter, saying, "Today we’re sharing difficult news. We have made the decision to permanently shut down Highguard on March 12. "Since launch, more than 2 million players stepped into Highguard’s world. You shared feedback, created content, and many believed in what we were building. For that, we are deeply grateful. "Despite the passion and hard work of our team, we have not been able to build a sustainable player base to support the game...
