I can't put a finger on why Borderlands 3 never clicked with me, but outside of its excellent expansions, I never felt enamored with its world. It wasn't until my chance to play a few hours of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands I think I unraveled my feelings towards the last numbered entry in the series: the stakes felt too high and were often at odds with the humor Borderlands is known for. Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, on the other hand, is pure fantasy, in more ways than one. Its story is completely self-contained, and so while I was playing through the quests offered during the four-hour preview, I never got the dissonance I felt from Borderlands 3. Instead I felt exactly how I want to feel when I'm playing Borderlands: invested in the story so...
The Batman's Robert Pattinson has shared his love for Final Fantasy 7 and the Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa "love triangle" that caused him a lot of (Cloud) strife growing up. Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz were being interviewed by Clique and Pattinson began excitedly talking about Final Fantasy 7, specifically the difficult choice of having to choose to fall in love with Aerith or Tifa. "I was in love with Aeris & Tifa," Pattinson revealed. "It’s the two options of girls… It’s a love triangle where Aeris, or Aerith depending on what version of the game you have… its sometimes mistranslated. She’s really kind girl that has superpowers to heal everyone and make the world a better place…" "Poor women, we have to heal everyone," Kravitz...
Welcome to the start of another week of exceptional deals and a dash of existential dread! It's a great time for a bit of escapism, my friends. I heartily recommend the long-form, fantasy holidays that are Elden Ring or The Witcher 3 GOTY. That deal on the post-apoc Far Cry New Dawn...uh, maybe less so. Marvel and Fortnite Team Up for a New Comic Mini-Series With Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, and Shuri
Marvel and Fortnite are once again teaming up for a new comic mini-series that will launch in June 2022 and star Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, and Shuri. As detailed on Marvel.com, Fortnite X Marvel: Zero War follows 2020's Fortnite X Marvel - Nexus War: Thor and has our heroes on the hunt for a crystallized fragment of the Zero Point that was sent to the Marvel Universe. Spider-Man and Wolverine will team up with Shuri and "several fan-favorites from Fortnite" to find this Zero Shard. Spider-Geddon's Christos Gage will be writing the story and he is teaming up with Epic Games' CCO Donald Mustard and artist Sergio Davila (Captain Marvel) to bring this series to life that will have "enormous ramifications for both universes."...
While Valve president Gabe Newell has shared that he doesn't think the company needs its own version of Xbox Game Pass right now, he said that he'd be "more than happy to work with [Microsoft] to get that on Steam." Speaking to PC Gamer, Newell discussed that despite him understanding the popularity of such services like Xbox Game Pass, he just doesn't see Valve committing resources to do a similar version any time soon. "I don't think it's something that we think we need to do ourselves, building a subscription service at this time," Newell said. "But for their customers it's clearly a popular option, and we'd be more than happy to work with them to get that on Steam." These comments align with Newell's previous comments that...
This review in progress of Destiny 2’s The Witch Queen expansion is based on ~35 hours of playing, which includes completing the main story and most of the side content. However, the new raid and any endgame content that may follow doesn’t debut until March 5, after which we will release a final, updated review and score. The reason I’ve stuck with Destiny for more than seven years, through both its highest highs and lowest lows, has everything to do with its incredibly strong foundation. Even when things like a poorly told story or a lack of content have held it back, firing magical space weapons and throwing flaming hammers at aliens just feels good! And while the past few expansions were adequate but flawed iterations that kept my...
Valve has already taken a stance on NFTs and cryptocurrency being allowed on Steam, blocking games that feature blockchain technology. President and co-founder Gabe Newell has now explained the reasoning behind the decision, saying that the biggest issues were the volatility of cryptocurrency and the bad actors behind NFTs. In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Newell noted that it's important to separate NFT technology from nefarious users. The concepts of digital ownership and shared universes are fine by themselves, he said, but he thinks that the bad actors in the NFT community outweigh any of the potential positives. "The people in the space, though, tend to be involved in a lot of criminal activity and a lot of sketchy...
Close to six years after its original release, Pokémon Go continues to be one of the most popular mobile games in the world. Nevertheless, its promised AR revolution hasn't quite materialized, and Valve co-founder Gabe Newell is among those disappointed. Speaking with Rock Paper Shotgun on the occasion of the Steam Deck's release, Newell said he thinks Pokémon Go should have had "more implications" for mobile gaming. Instead, follow-ups like Harry Potter Wizard's Unite have mostly fizzled out. By contrast, Newell hopes that Valve can follow up on the release of the Steam Deck by building more mobile experience that make sense for the platform. "I think Pokémon Go really should have had more more implications for people thinking...
We already knew that Valve planned to make an official dock for the Steam Deck. Until today, we never had a good look at what the product actually looks like. You can check out one of the two new images of the dock below. This is the first time we are seeing full renders of the Steam Deck's official dock. Though imagery has appeared prior to today, it never really painted a clear picture of what we could expect. As Valve confirmed previously, the Steam Deck Dock features a USB-C cable used to connect to the Steam Deck's USB-C port on the top of the handheld. The dock also includes one HDMI 2.0 port, one Display Port 1.4, one Ethernet port, one power in port, and three USB-A ports (one USB 3.1 and two USB 2.0). In our first...

Surprise! Valve woke up this morning and decided to announce a brand new game that isn't Half-Life 3. Instead, it's called Aperture Desk Job, a free playable short made especially for Steam Deck. Aperture Desk Job is, per Valve, a reimagining of the "walking simulator" genre in favor of "the lightning-spanked, endorphin-gorged world of sitting still behind things." you play as an entry-level employee of Aperture Science (the deeply fraught organization at the center of Half-Life and Portal) whose job it is to inspect products. It's not clear what all that exactly entails in the game itself, but the trailer implies some explosions. The game is specifically made to show off the Steam Deck, which officially launched today, though it's...

If you were worried that Valve might increase the price of the Steam Deck, fear not. Co-founder Gabe Newell confirmed that the pricing for its portable gaming PC will remain untouched, although the company may look into 'higher end' new models. During a recent interview, Newell told IGN that Valve has no plans to increase the price of any of the three original hardware configurations for the Steam Deck. "I mean, part of what you do with pricing is you're making a promise to customers. [...] But we wouldn't expect to be adjusting the SKU pricing," Newell said. That's no surprise in and of itself. Last July, Newell said that hitting the Steam Deck price was "painful" but "critical," noting that the company had to be "very aggressive"...
The Steam Deck is officially released today, and as the portable gaming PC begins shipping out to some buyers, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell sees the new handheld having an impact on the PC space akin to how Apple's iPhone impacted the mobile phone industry. Relatedly, he says demand has been "a lot higher than we expected." Speaking to IGN in an interview about the Steam Deck's launch and the future, Newell was asked how long the Steam Deck had been in the works and whether the concept predated the Nintendo Switch. Newell's response was interesting, noting how the idea of playing your favorite PC games on the go has been something the space has wanted for decades, long before Nintendo launched its hybrid gaming system. "I think every...
The Steam Deck is easily one of the most anticipated pieces of PC gaming tech since… well, maybe ever? The promise of carrying the entirety of your Steam library wherever you go on this bulky but well-designed and relatively powerful handheld gaming device is massively alluring, especially to those of us who continuously fatten our backlog with each passing Steam sale. And after a couple of weeks of gaming on Valve’s ambitious handheld PC I can say that a lot of the time it does live up to that hype, but right now, trying to review the Steam Deck is like hitting a moving target. For one thing, whether or not specific games work at a level you'll find acceptable, or at all, is a case-by-case basis. Additionally, I’ve found myself...
Editor's Note: The war in Ukraine is an ongoing, painful and emotive topic. IGN urges community members to be respectful when engaging in conversation around this subject and does not endorse harassment of any kind. Footage from video games has been misattributed as real footage of the war in Ukraine, with social networks beginning to ramp up attempts to stop it spreading. Some footage appears to have been purposely doctored to represent news coverage, misleading viewers about the true status of the war. Other footage seems to be being used simply as a means of receiving engagement on social media – even if unintentional, the harmful after-effect of this kind of post is in where it is shared without context afterwards, spreading...

Bandai Namco has apologized for a number of performance issues affecting Elden Ring players, including numerous complaints of frame rate issues on PC. In a post on its website, the publisher acknowledged that the game is "currently experiencing some issues that are preventing the game from playing properly under some conditions," and apologized while asking for patience. By far the biggest compaint around the game's current state is about frame rate and stuttering issues on PC. The game is currently seeing "Mixed" reviews on Steam, with many complaints focused on the above issues. That issue has been exacerbated by the fact that console versions received a patch to alleviate frame rate problems (among other things) on launch day...
Elden Ring is finally out now, and it's been verified to work well on Steam Deck – which is also released today. Valve has already confirmed that Elden Ring, the wildly popular new release from FromSoftware, is “fully functional” on the company’s handheld gaming device. “Valve’s testing indicates that Elden Ring is Verified on Steam Deck,” reads the compatibility checker. This game is fully functional on Steam Deck and works great with built-in controls and display.” What exactly does this mean? Well, games that are given the “verified” status must satisfy four different criteria: Input: The game has full controller support, uses appropriate controller input icons, and automatically brings up the on-screen keyboard when needed...
Warning: this article contains mild spoilers for Elden Ring. In the lead up to Elden Ring’s launch, there’s been one breakout character who has been embraced by the community: Pot Boy. Later called Pot Friend by Bandai Namco, this sentient ceramic has captured the hearts of thousands. But we’ve got bad news about the pot boys. They’re definitely not all friends. The most famous of the pot boys is Alexander. He’s the one you may have seen in gameplay clips who is stuck in the ground in need of aid. Don’t worry about this big lad; he’s a friend, and will even clue you in on an important location. But not every one of his kin is so friendly. Within the walls of some of Elden Ring’s dungeons, you’ll come across both small and large...
Warning: this article contains spoilers for Elden Ring’s first location. Elden Ring has continued FromSoftware’s long running in-joke by once again including a character that Souls fans love to hate. In Elden Ring’s opening location of Limgrave players can find Patches, the bald trickster who has constantly pulled pranks on players throughout the Soulsborne series of games. This time around, Patches can be found in the Murkwater Cave. Should you wish to find him you’ll want to follow the river north and keep your eye out for a dungeon entrance. Once again he can be a valuable ally thanks to his collection of wares on sale (you might want to inspect his inventory before heading into Stormveil Castle) but he’ll prove a nuisance...
The venerable Gran Turismo 7 is not the only racing game being released in the next week or so that can trace its roots way back to 1997; indeed, the first seeds of Grid Legends sprouted that same year with retro racing royalty TOCA Touring Cars on PC and the original PlayStation. Mining that 25-year history for inspiration and reenlisting some long-forgotten characters, Codemasters has turned Grid Legends into a sequel to both 2019’s Grid and 2002’s TOCA Race Driver, which was the first time the studio had injected a story into the series. The live-action, documentary-style approach of Grid Legends is very different from the primitive PS2 cutscenes of the pioneering TOCA Race Driver, but it’s a story I’ve enjoyed watching unfold – even...
A number of Ukrainian game development studios, as well as members of the wider games industry have spoken up following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia late last night. Russia's attack began on Thursday morning with Russian President Vladimir Putin announcing he would carry out "a special military operation" in Ukraine. Following his statement, attacks began in ten regions of Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, and have since expanded across the country. Ukraine's ambassador has claimed that at least 40 troops have now been killed along with "dozens" of civilians, and Ukraine has reportedly lost its control of the Chernobyl nuclear site. In response, Ukrainian developers including Frogwares (The Sinking City, Sherlock Holmes)...
Thank your own personal God—possibly Godwyn the Golden—it's Friday! Today, I'm using this space to signal boost a worthy cause announced by 11 Bit Studios. From their tweet: "from the next seven days, all profits from This War of Mine, all its DLCs, on all stores and platforms will go to a special fund [...] This money will be donated to the Ukranian Red Cross to directly support victims of war in Ukraine." Enough said. Stay safe, save often and see you all on Monday. Microsoft has announced that March 2022's Games with Gold are The Flame in the Flood, Street Power Soccer, Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, and SpongeBob's Truth or Square. As revealed on Xbox Wire, the four Games with Gold will be available to anyone with Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, with The Flame in the Flood and Sacred 2: Fallen Angel available on March 1. The Flame in the Flood is a survival game where players take control of Scout, who must venture down a treacherous river with her dog, Aesop. In our 7/10 review, IGN said "The Flame in the Flood is a beautiful procedurally generated survival sim that gains a welcome sense of momentum from the need to stay on the move," though "its unwieldy menus and tendency to crash...
Knockout City is soon going fully free-to-play and EA is stepping away as publisher. Developer Velan Studios announced in a blog post that it's taking over and will self-publish the dodgeball combat game when it enters its second year on the market. These changes will come into effect when the game enters Season 6, and though Velan Studios only specified that this will be in the spring, it seems likely to occur in May based on the current season schedule and because the game originally launched in May 2021. Knockout City Season 5, which begins on March 1, will have less content as a result of the changes: there won't be a new Brawl Pass, new map, or new ball, and there will also be less cosmetics and bundles. Velan Studios said...
Syberia: The World Before is the fourth entry in the two-decade-old Syberia adventure game series. It spawned from the mind of the late Benoit Sokal, and in Syberia: The World Before, Microids studio is keeping the flame of the narrative adventure game burning bright. With an intriguing world, engaging puzzles, and a fascinating narrative, I am genuinely curious to see how the rest of the story plays out and see how these characters' relationships intertwine after playing the opening three chapters. The beginning of Syberia puts you in the shoes of Dana Roze, a young woman who is trying to build a career as a pianist returning to her home of Vaghen – a town facing tensions leading up to the Second World War. Unfortunately, out of the...
2022 has already turned into a big year for fans of CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077. The developer recently delivered the long-awaited next-gen upgrade, and now Dark Horse Direct has a new wave of Cyberpunk-themed collectibles. IGN can exclusively reveal the next three additions to Dark Horse's line of Cyberpunk 2077 figures - Adam Smasher, Judy Alvarez and Panam Palmer. Get a closer look at all three, along with a new Cyberpunk 2077 art print, in the slideshow gallery below. While Dark Horse brands these collectibles as "Figures," they're actually non-articulated PVC statues. Judy Alvarez and Panam Palmer both measure roughly 9 inches tall, while Adam Smasher clocks in at 12 inches including his rocket launcher and oversized base...
Warning: This article contains descriptions of graphic content, including bodily mutilation, sexual content, and more. This article also contains what could be considered spoilers - proceed at your own discretion. PlayStation versions of historical horror game Martha Is Dead recently received seemingly last-minute modifications – and we now what was removed (or modifed) and at least some of the reason as to why. Having spoken to publisher Wired Interactive, and consulted with IGN's reviewer, we now know that the PlayStation version has removed interactivity from scenes where players slice and peel off a corpse's face and cut open a corpse's womb with scissors. References to masturbation were also removed, and the PlayStation version...
