In recent years, video game companies like Nintendo and PlayStation have set expectations for any pre-recorded shows by announcing beforehand what kind of stream viewers should expect — whether focused on indie games, third-party titles, or about a specific game. This has been a welcome change as it sets appropriate expectations for an upcoming Nintendo Direct or State of Play showcase. After all, nobody will expect to see a new Zelda trailer during a Splatoon 3 Direct. Sony did this too for its most recent State of Play earlier this week, announcing that the show will primarily focus on PSVR 2, Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad, and some indie and third-party games. But if the recent State of Play showcases have demonstrated anything, it’s...
Editor's Note: The war in Ukraine is an ongoing, painful and emotive topic. IGN urges community members to be respectful when engaging in conversation around this subject and does not endorse harassment of any kind. Atomic Heart's launch week has been surrounded by controversy, as developer Mundfish is facing backlash for its Russian ties in relation to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, and a racist cartoon present within the game. Earlier this week, PC Gamer published a story about online criticism surrounding the presence of a racist caricature within Atomic Heart. The caricature in question was found in the game's Resident Evil-style save rooms, where players can take a breather from the action and watch old episodes of Nu...

Baldur's Gate 3 finally got a release date yesterday, but fans quickly noticed that Xbox wasn't included in developer Larian Studios' launch plans. In a statement to IGN, Larian Studios clarified the situation, saying the studio is "planning to release Baldur’s Gate 3 for PC, Mac, GeForce NOW and PS5." An Xbox version is in development, but Larian Studios has struggled to get splitscreen co-op working on Xbox Series X|S, which leaves the studio unable to ship that version at launch. Check out the full statement below, where Larian Studios explains that there's no exclusivity deal holding back an Xbox version: "Following yesterday’s PS5 and release date announcement, we’ve clarified that right now, we’re planning to release Baldur’s...
It's time for another Question Block edition of the weekly NVC column. This week, we're answering what seems like an easy one, but it turns out it's NOT easy. Shane Dowley wrote us at nvc@ign.com and asked the following question: "For new Switch buyers, what would be your top 5 essential games that you would tell them to buy?" First off, we answered this during this week's episode of NVC, but we're getting a little more formal with the answers. Much as Wheel of Fortune automatically gives players in the final round a free R,S,T,L,N and E, we answered this question with the most common games as give-ins: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Mario Odyssey. The remaining picks are below. Reb...

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Legacy has sold more than 12 million units since its debut earlier this month, making it the biggest global launch ever for Warner Bros. Games. Hogwarts Legacy's sales numbers were revealed alongside Warner Bros. Discovery's earnings, which saw the company lose some $2.1 billion. That makes Hogwarts Legacy, which has been controversial itself, a rare bright spot for the company's financials. On top of the large sales figure, Warner Bros. Games touted $850 million in sales globally and 1.28 million peak concurrent viewers on Twitch — a new record for a single-player game. Developed by Avalanche Software under the Portkey Games label, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Legacy earned notice by allowing players to roam a...
Changes are coming to the Call of Duty franchise's upcoming release in 2023, and players will remain settled in the modern era. In a new report from Bloomberg, Activision has modified its annual Call of Duty release schedule plans. Shifting away from a planned expansion for Modern Warfare, reports now state that it will move towards another full game set in the Modern era, to be developed by Sledgehammer Games. Previous reports last year stated that plans for Call of Duty in 2023 would be an experimental phase for the franchise, focusing on a high-end expansion for last year's Modern Warfare 2, which is apparently scaled up for a full release. Though no official details are out as of this time, the Bloomberg report stated that the game...

With a cartoony animated style, the game follows the monster students of Volcano High as they say goodbye to high school and prepare themselves for the next stage of their lives. Gameplay is a mixture of narrative conversations with some simple-looking rhythm sections, as you play through things like band practice for the main characters' band "Vvorm Drama." While Cal Kestis was part of a crew in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order – exploring the galaxy in the Stinger Mantis ship with his mentor, Cere Junda; its captain, Greez, and (eventually) his former bitter enemy turned bestie, Nightsister Merrin – once he was boots on the ground planetside, it was largely a fairly lonely adventure. Outside, of course, of the companionship of the ever adorable BD-1. That changes in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor thanks to the addition of Bode Akuna, a new character in Jedi Survivor, played by Noshir Dalal, who can be seen in the reveal trailer lending a hand to Cal both in a cutscene and in gameplay where he executes a cool tandem finisher on a Scout Trooper. But Bode’s presence as a companion character goes far...

Back in 1964, Addis lead design on The Sumerian Game which included innovative features including game updates, narrative experiences, and early versions of what would become cutscenes. This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award will then be granted to Romero, who’s perhaps most famous for his work on genre defining games including Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake. Romero has published more than 100 games...
The detractors of Xbox Game Pass are running out of goalposts to move. One of the last remaining legitimate gripes against Microsoft’s game-subscription service is that it’s been more like basic cable rather than HBO. In other words, plenty of good stuff, but very little content that’s truly top-shelf. But just two months into 2023, that argument seems toast too. Take a look at the roll that Xbox Game Pass has gotten started, and how long it’s set to keep going: Hi-Fi Rush (January 25) – Many pixels’ worth of well-deserved digital ink have been spilled writing about Tango Gameworks’s viral, shadow-dropped hit. Microsoft didn’t just release a first-party game out of nowhere, it released a much-needed amazing first-party game out of...
Famed game developer Shinji Mikami, well known for directing the original Resident Evil and The Evil Within, is leaving Tango Gameworks after 13 years. Confirmed in a tweet from Bethesda (below), Mikami will be leaving the studio — which he founded in 2010 — in the coming months. "We can confirm that Shinji Mikami has decided to leave Tango Gameworks in the coming months," the post said. "We thank him for his work as a creative leader and supportive mentor to young developers on The Evil Within franchise, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and, of course, Hi-Fi Rush. "We wish Mikami-san well in the future and are excited by what lies ahead for the talented developers at Tango." No reason for his departure was given, and Mikami himself is yet to...

It’s been a little over a year since Microsoft announced its intention to acquire Activision Blizzard. Since then, what looked to be another blockbuster acquisition appears far more uncertain as regulators in multiple countries scrutinize a deal that could potentially upend the video game industry. While legal experts have maintained that the Activision Blizzard acquisition doesn’t constitute a monopoly (more on that later), it still marks a seismic shift in the video game landscape – and warrants an appropriate level of examination. But how did another day in the increasing mergers-focused industry become such a regulatory landmine? Read on for a full breakdown of how we got here. January 18, 2022 - Microsoft Announces It Will...
Ubisoft has announced a new update for the PlayStation 4 version of Assassin's Creed Syndicate that will finally fix the game's flickering issues when playing on PlayStation 5. Assassin's Creed Syndicate first launched for PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2015. But, when playing the game on PS5, fans noticed a flickering issue during gameplay with seemingly no solution. Reddit conversations about the issue date back over five months, with the issue becoming a bigger problem after the game was noticed by more people through PlayStation Plus' Extra tier. Now, thanks to the Title Update 1.53 coming tomorrow, players will be able to enjoy the game flicker free. Syndicate was the last traditional Assassin's Creed game before Ubisoft...
Ever since Microsoft announced its intention to acquire Activision Blizzard in an unprecedented $69 billion deal, it’s felt like the news around regulators swarming to slam on the merger brakes hasn’t let up. There are pages of arguments, tweets and interviews and quotes from executives, and plenty of internet chatter about what’s happening and why. From the outside looking in, it can be tough to sift through what’s important and what’s not, and who’s speaking from a position of expertise and who’s just guessing at the outcome. Regardless, this deal has the potential to impact gamers more than any other merger to date, so it’s important to be informed on how and why governments look at this stuff, how unprecedented this is exactly...
