I've been nerding out over Warhammer Fantasy and 40K since before I could drive, but my relationship with Age of Sigmar, Games Workshop's most recent plane-hopping, epic fantasy spinoff has been mostly at arm's length. Realms of Ruin is an upcoming RTS that reached out a gleaming, armored fist to pull me in a bit closer. And the fact that it looks a lot like Dawn of War, aka one of my favorite RTS series of all time, made me all the more eager to reach out and grab it. If you're not up to speed on what exactly Age of Sigmar is, I'll do my best to break it down for you quickly. The world of Warhammer Fantasy, the one we see in the Total War: Warhammer games, was completely destroyed when the ravening forces of Chaos finally won in a...
If you’ve been lucky (unlucky?) enough to have been graced by the presence of Diablo 4’s infamous The Butcher, you may have noticed he appeared larger than you expected. Or perhaps he grew in size as you fought, likely in vain, to survive. It turns out there’s an explanation for this Giant Butcher, and it suggests all enemies are similarly susceptible to enlargement. Our story starts with a Reddit post from a confused IronHeart_777, who ran into a Giant Butcher while killing demons in a Nightmare Dungeon. Alongside posting a screenshot of this larger than virtual life demon, IronHeart_777 asked: “So uh… anyone know why we found a Giant Butcher? He appeared this big…” Strange! But there’s more. Icy-Veins subsequently reported on a...
Advertising standards officials have dismissed a complaint about a Diablo 4 “Welcome to Hell” billboard displayed in Melbourne. The unnamed complainant contacted the Australian Ad Standards Community Panel to say the billboard “brought back memories of the hell of the two years of lockdowns in Melbourne”. The person also accused the advert of causing offense to Christians and Catholics, and “promoting evil and satanic paraphernalia”. “The words 'welcome to Hell Melbourne' as part of the advertisement for this game and a picture of a devil are offensive to me as a Christian,” reads the complaint. “The imagery is also inappropriate for my children to see and has already given them nightmares. The imagery is frightening to children...
Friday the 13th: The Game players will soon have their accounts maxed out to level 150 and be granted every unlockable in the game. The game's Twitter account posted a list of changes coming on July 6, which essentially give players access to everything ahead of Friday the 13th's delisting later this year. Every player will be given the 30 most popular legendary perks with the best rolls possible, every unique kill (outside of DLC), and have all Challenge Skulls unlocked as their accounts are boosted to level 150. "This was the best way we knew how to give you, the players, the best experience and a heartfelt thank you, as we move towards an inevitable goodbye," said Wes Keltner, boss of publisher Gun Interactive, in a follow-up...
Xbox and Bethesda are officially locked in for Gamescom 2023, meaning fans attending the event may get a chance to play Starfield ahead of its September 6 launch. Gamescom itself announced the news in a tweet (below). "Breaking. Xbox and Bethesda will join us on the show floor for Gamescom 2023," it said. "More details soon." Xbox is a regular exhibitor at the convention in Germany, having shown up every year in a time when PlayStation hasn't. Sony is yet to confirm if it will attend the 2023 show. Sony last appeared in 2019, opting not to have a presence at the digital-only show caused by COVID-19 or the subsequent events. Nintendo was in the same boat, but confirmed in April it would return to Gamescom in 2023. 2022 saw the...
I've done all of the hard work for you this morning. With great effort, I've waded through Valve's deal pool with the discounts, at times, coming right up to my nostrils. Everything worth mentioning has been mentioned below. You need only size up that prospective title and decide whether or not to grab hold and heave it way, way up onto that pile of shame of yours. Long-time Yakuza protagonist Kazuma Kiryu will have a new English voice actor starting in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, and fans are unsure about it. As reported by The Gamer, YouTuber Yong Yea is replacing Darryl Kurylo and gave fans a preview of the new voice at Anime Expo 2023's Dragons of Japan panel. "That little monologue he did was painful," said a Reddit user in response. "And the yell at the end was very much not Kiryu." Others were less critical of the performance, though still didn't think it was a good fit. "Yong Yea's voice isn't horrible but it sounds like a 20 year old, not a 50 year old," said one. The YouTuber posted on Twitter to defend himself though, and released a better quality but still...
As Terraria’s next major patch approaches, developer Re-Logic has revealed it’s “hard to move on” and start a new project owing to the success and demand generated by the 2011 cult game. "After 12 years the game still sells like hot cakes," said Re-Logic head Andrew Spinks in a Twitter post from his now deactivated account, as reported by PC Gamer. "There is so much demand it makes it hard to move on." Since its release in May 2011, Terraria has graced every active gaming platform under the sun, ranging from the PC and Nintendo Switch to the PlayStation Vita, smartphones, and even Google Stadia, following a fraught development process. During its 12-year lifespan Terraria has expanded significantly in scope, thanks to a slew of...
Amazon Prime Day is right around the corner on July 11-12, but we've already started to get a few extra deals before the big event next week. These will likely be locked up and dressed as Prime Day offers next week, but for now you're able to get these deals without having a Prime account. This will change soon so you better lock up this Elden Ring discount ASAP. It's down to just £35 on Xbox, and £36 on PS5 at Amazon for a limited time only. That's up to £25 off the RRP of £59.99, and the best deal we've ever seen on the 2022 Game of the Year. Other great deals you might want to consider right now include Xbox Seagate Expansion Card for its all-time low price of £139, Star Wars Jedi Survivor for just £48, and Xbox Series S consoles...
Diablo 4 has been out for a month now, and as players work their way through the campaign or the endgame with characters either at or approaching the level cap, the community is digging into the detail of how Blizzard’s action role-playing game actually works. But there are some rabbit holes players perhaps need not go down. This week, some Diablo 4 players convinced themselves the game’s rats lead players to better loot. In a sort of reverse Pied Piper situation, redditor zerger45 took to the Diablo 4 sub to declare: “FOLLOW THE RATS.” “Okay this is going to sound really bizarre, but you need to follow the rats for good loot,” zerger45 claimed in the post, which has 8,400 upvotes. “Don’t follow the predetermined path in any...
Atlus may have accidentally given fans a little more bang for their buck by revealing a new playable character in Persona 5 Tactica's latest trailer. As reported by Game Rant, a two-minute character spotlight trailer (above) breaking down the moves and abilities of Joker, Mona, and Erina also revealed a character called Toshiro that will seemingly be playable in the game. Only viewable briefly, at about 36 seconds into the trailer, the mission objective is to "have Toshiro reach the target destination". The bottom right corner of the screen, where playable characters like Joker and Mona have their health bars, also shows what's presumably Toshiro. This character has a much smaller health bar than the others though, and also doesn't...
July is upon us and with it comes not only the best indie games releasing in July, but also the oppressive heat and humidity that some weirdos claim to love. Not us though, you can find us in a dark room praying for rain and tweeting about how horrific it is to be too warm. Way more often than not, Turtle Beach make a shelluva good headset. You've got to sand it to 'em. Horrific wordplay aside, their products do often grace the apex end of our Budget to Best lists. My sound catchers have been happily ensconced in their offerings since the company started making ear-cans in 2005, which is why I jumped to give these new Stealth Pros a crack. As you'd expect from a high-end audio solution, they're not an inexpensive proposition. That being said, if you're a connoisseur of aural pleasures — or a pro gaming strategist who knows the value of bat-level threat detection — then the price of a well-made peripheral at this tier is often justified. Before I dive into the pros and cons of this headset as I see them...
The Steam Summer sale continues to gather...uh, steam...today. Case in point: it's pushed down the RRPs of a bunch of PlayStation-to-PC must-owns. Personally, I'd take this opportunity to give Days Gone another shot. Not a perfect game, by any means, but it's slowly but surely gaining cult-hit status. Maybe just get it at a discount before the day's gone. Disney Games and Gameloft Barcelona have announced that Disney Speedstorm will officially race out of Early Access on September 28, 2023. On September 28, Disney Speedstorm will be free-to-play on Switch, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and PC and will bring with it many of the lessons the dev team learned during the Early Access period which began on April 18, 2023. “Since the launch of Early Access, we’ve received invaluable feedback and support from players, which have been instrumental in shaping Disney Speedstorm into the incredible racing experience it is today,” says Aska Suzuki, Game Manager. “Our incredible community’s enthusiasm, dedication, and love for the game have been our inspiration from day one, and we can't...
Whether it’s the emergence of the battle royale genre or breakout multiplayer survival games, PC gaming often serves as the frontier for the latest trends and innovations in the gaming landscape, often leading to massive concentrations of players. But of all the PC games ever to appear on the Steam charts, few have enjoyed the exceptional popularity of those atop Steam’s most played charts. Based on the maximum number of concurrent players ever held by any game on Valve’s platform, here are the 15 most played Steam games of all time. 15. Fallout 4 Concurrent Player Record: 472,962 As the long-awaited sequel from the studio that had most recently released The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the anticipation for Fallout 4 was undeniable...
Game Pass is losing the beloved Spelunky 2 alongside two other games soon. The Xbox and PC Game Pass Leaving Soon pages were updated to include the fan-favourite cave exploration game alongside Exo One and Paw Patrol The Movie: Adventure City Calls. All three games are set to leave Game Pass July 15, though it's worth pointing out Xbox offers 20% off to those looking to buy a Game Pass title outright. Those looking to continue spelunking could therefore do so to lessen the sting a little. In what could be a one-two punch for some users, Microsoft also announced a price rise for its subscription service recently. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will cost $16.99 (a $2 increase) as of July 6 and a regular Xbox Game Pass subscription will cost...
Square Enix is officially in on the joke surrounding Final Fantasy 14's infamous low-poly grapes as the publisher is giving away real versions of them at Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival. Square Enix announced a goody bag for those attending the fan event in Las Vegas on July 28-29. Among the random bits of merch in that bag is a phyical version of the grapes that became an instant meme upon release of the Endwalker expansion. Though the chunky piece of DLC was generally loved by fans, the internet erupted in accumulative laughter at one piece of its environment which featured the cuboid grapes. Anyone with a ticket to Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival will get the grapes alongside a crossbody bag featuring the event logo, a 10th...
Overwatch 2 likely won’t get any further story missions for at least the next two seasons following the launch of Season 6, Invasion, according to the game’s executive producer Jared Neuss. "Don't expect the next round [of story missions] in the next season and the season after that, or anything like that," commented Neuss during a recent Twitch appearance alongside streamer Emongg, reported on by GamesRadar. "It is very much like trying to find that balance between getting [story missions] in front of players quickly because we love story stuff, and giving ourselves enough time to make changes or add features." Neuss revealed during a seperate Twitch stream in May earlier this year that Blizzard was outright cancelling Overwatch 2’s...
The already messy situation around Ark: Survival Evolved's remaster just got messier as developer Studio Wildcard has delayed the game to October. As reported by PC Gamer, an update on the Ark forums revealed the push to October but no specific release date was shared. The controversial move from Studio Wildcard to shut down the original game's servers has also been delayed to September 30. The remaster, titled Ark: Survival Ascended, has also received a price reduction to $44.99 but those who buy it on day one will pay $39.99. The delay is a result of complications in working with the new engine. "We’ve found it challenging working with Unreal Engine 5.2, but at the same time, it is incredibly exciting," said Studio Wuldcard in the...
Few franchises have received as much praise for their narratives as Life is Strange, so it isn’t a total surprise that the series just received a spin-off in the form of the novel Steph’s Story. This might seem to some gamers, however, like a spin-off too far. Video game adaptations don’t exactly have a reputation for capturing the quality of the source material. However, here is a genuinely great piece of work that reflects a series of stories keen to punch above expectations. A History of Video Game Novels Many of the most significant series in gaming have leaped across to the printed page. Doom is the perfect example of an unlikely candidate making that jump. Its original two titles were basically plotless games that managed to...
The much beloved Steam Summer Sale is now in its fourth day. To say the store is thick with discounts would be something of an understatement. Instead, let me use this space to say something non-obvious: legendary console, the Super Nintendo, celebrates its 31st birthday today. What a machine. Following reports of games made with AI art being banned from Steam, Valve has revealed a bit of its thought process in regard to games being shipped with AI-generated content on its digital storefront. Valve responded to our question about these reports, like from Kotaku, which gathered stories from various devs who were seeing their AI-infused games blocked from Steam for reasons such as Valve not being able to "ship games for which the developer does not have all the necessary rights" or for "utilizing AI tech." Valve confirmed it is still learning about the ever-quickly-evolving AI just as we all are. Furthermore, it doesn't want to discourage devs from submitting games with AI-generated content for Steam, it just wants to make...

If Microsoft could make a video game that was as successful and beloved by gamers as Call of Duty, it wouldn’t have been in court in late June. That’s the core of the issue, according to economists, the San Francisco judge, and onlookers who await the judge’s decision with baited breath. “We wouldn’t be here if Microsoft had created Call of Duty,” Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley said to lawyers representing Microsoft and the FTC. The law wants people to make their own creative video game smash hits, rather than purchasing them, according to the judge last Thursday. Corley is poised to make a decision within two weeks on whether Microsoft can acquire Activision Blizzard for nearly $70 billion. Most experts IGN spoke to think that...
Xbox recently took the wraps off Playground Games' Fable reboot at the Xbox Games Showcase, revealing a fun and whimsical take on the classic franchise. The trailer was well-received, but some observers criticized its lack of gameplay. Peter Molyneux, who helped design the original Fable and has more recently been dabbling in NFTs, agrees. "Like you, I would have loved to see more gameplay, but I loved when the hero threw the fireball. I loved the sensation of the impact. I thought it was truly promising. So yes, my expectations are high," Molyneux told GameReactor in a recent interview. He went on to praise the IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade as a "perfect choice" for the game, and that "making him be obsessed with vegetables was very...
The Microsoft FTC trial is a wrap, and while we don't have a ruling yet, we learned a lot of inside industry information that's not usually available to the public. From drama surrounding the exclusivity of Starfield and other Bethesda titles to the cost of producing huge AAA games like The Last of Us Part II, there were plenty of bombshell reveals from this week's court battle. Here are 12 big things we learned from the Xbox FTC hearing. Xbox Admits It Lost the Console Wars The entire Xbox/Activision Blizzard saga has been filled with both Microsoft and Sony downplaying their respective achievements to appear as meek as possible to regulators. The FTC hearing was no exception, as the week kicked off with news of Microsoft claiming...
Ubisoft is reportedly developing a remake of 2013’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. However, it's apparently in its early stages and won’t be complete for a few years. According to Kotaku, a team at Ubisoft Singapore is heavily involved in the remake’s development. The Singapore studio is also helping out with evolving Assassin’s Creed’s ocean technology as it is currently working on Skull and Bones. In an internal email viewed by Kotaku, the Singapore studio is reportedly forcing its developers to work on Skull and Bones in person at the office instead of remotely. While the studio is seemingly providing breakfast and dinner, it looks like the move is to pressure its developers to work longer hours in order to ship the closed beta...

Daedalic Entertainment, the studio behind the long-delayed and poorly-reviewed The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, is shutting down its internal development arm. In a new article by Games Wirtschaft, the outlet reported that Daedalic Entertainment will now focus on game publishing, sales, and marketing. The studio sent out a statement to Games Wirtschaft, stating that it was a "difficult turning point" for the company. Daedalic Entertainment also told the studio that it is laying off people, with 25 individuals impacted by the layoffs. "We value each and every member of our team, and it is important to us that the transition goes as smoothly as possible," a Daedalic spokesperson told Games Wirtschaft. "Therefore, we will support our...
