It's time to celebrate two things—the start of November and a bit of Mid-week Madness discounting. The former is great because it means our end-of-year breaks are within rendering distance (not just some objectless HUD marker on the horizon). And the benefits of discounts? Well, that speaks for itself, really. There's a fair chance we'll need to give gifts during the aforementioned break. May as well score 'em cheap now. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is slated to release on Nov. 10 with a price tag of $70. But, for players who are planning on buying the recently announced slimmer PlayStation 5 model in the near future, Modern Warfare 3 will be essentially free thanks to a newly announced bundle. According to new ads shared by Call of Duty news site CharlieIntel, Sony is selling a PlayStation 5 Slim Disc Edition - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III bundle to celebrate Modern Warfare 3's launch, and it'll be $499 — the same price as the PS5 slim without a bundle, making the game a free addition to a PS5 slim. The bundle is seemingly intended to launch when MW3 is released on Nov. 10 and will be available while supplies last, although some players have...
In an internal town hall meeting addressing a Monday round of layoffs that impacted multiple departments, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons allegedly told remaining employees that the company had kept “the right people” to continue work on Destiny 2. Speaking to multiple current and recently laid off employees, IGN has confirmed reports that Bungie took responsibility for the layoffs, rather than laying them at the feet of parent company Sony. Parsons told employees that the layoffs were largely due to underperformance of Destiny 2 over the last year, as well as lower-than-expected preorders for upcoming expansion The Final Shape. IGN can now independently confirm reports that The Final Shape has been delayed to June 2024, and Marathon has...
While it’s not quite over yet, 2023 has certainly been an incredible year for game releases. Whether we look back on it as one of the greatest years in gaming history remains to be seen, but there’s a good chance we’ll be talking about The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Baldur’s Gate 3, Metroid Prime Remastered, Alan Wake 2, Diablo IV, Street Fighter 6, and the Resident Evil 4 remake for years to come. We’ve given four games a 10 this year, and a further 27 have received a nine, so that puts it up there alongside great moments like 2004 (Halo 2, Half-Life 2, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, GTA: San Andreas) or 1998 (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Half-Life, Starcraft, Resident Evil 2, Metal Gear Solid). You may not...
Great horror RPGs are more difficult to find than you might think. Despite clever innovations like the sanity stat, role-playing designers still tend to favor swords and sorcery over everything else (just ask sci-fi fans). That doesn’t mean there aren’t some perfectly scary RPGs out there, though. Whether they feature raw psychological horror or more traditional werewolves and vampires, there’s plenty of spookiness to be found in the role-playing genre. So on this, the spookiest day of the year, here are five great RPGs to play on Halloween. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines Troika was an RPG studio that was aptly named. Led by Fallout developers Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, who would later go on to work on The Outer Worlds...

Last week we launched IGN's Festival of Fear, and part of the occassion was marked by the return of our Best Horror Video Game Face-Off. We added the latest batch of terrifying games to the list, like Resident Evil 4 Remake, Lies of P, and Sons of the Forest to see if any of them had what it took to dethrone Silent Hill 2 (which won the last Face-Off a year ago). After thousands and thousands of battles, a new champion of horror games has now ascended to the spooky throne, leaving Silent Hill 2 in its wake. So, which game claimed the top horrifying honor? Chilling drumroll, please... With an 84.0% win percentage, Resident Evil 4 Remake has, perhaps unsurprisingly, become the new winner of the best horror video game of all time...
The Chinese Room has revealed Phyre, the Elder Kindred who will serve as the main playable character in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2. To learn more, we had the chance to speak to narrative designer Arone Le Bray all about this vampire who was Embraced in the early 17th century. Phyre is a character with a long history, but you will be able to customize them and choose their gender, clan, outfits, behavior, and so much more. You'll have to think carefully, however, as your actions, meaning your conversations, what you wear, how you feed and/or treat Seattle's populace, and more will have massive consequences on the world around you and how the story progresses. As to what that world is, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines...

More than two years after the release of Deltarune Chapter 2, creator Toby Fox shared an update, touching base on how development is going for the final three chapters, including an updated release plan that will make the game available for purchase once Chapter 4 is complete. In a blog post, Fox revealed that the development for Chapter 5 is taking longer than anticipated. With Chapter 3 nearly done and a significant portion of Chapter 4 already complete, Fox announced that the new plan is to release Chapter 3 and 4 together and make the game purchasable. This is a slight change from Fox's original plan, where he revealed in 2021 that he wanted to release Chapter 3, 4, and 5 concurrently. "My original plan was to release Chapters...

Gears of War needs a reboot similar to that of the God of War series, Cliff Bleszinski has said. Speaking to Comic Book, the Gears co-creator turned comic book scribe called on Xbox boss Phil Spencer to give him a ring for a spot of consultancy, should Microsoft greenlight such a project. “I believe Gears needs a little bit of a reboot, like God of War had, and I've always said, Phil Spencer has my number, I'm happy to consult,” Bleszinski said. Gears of War’s latest mainline release was 2019’s Gears 5, although turn-based tactics spin-off Gears Tactics launched a year later in 2020. IGN’s Gears 5 review returned a 9/10: “No matter which mode you approach it from, Gears 5 is an incredibly fun and polished game.” However, apart...
Dark Horse is continuing to expand its growing lineup of figures based on the Witcher games. The series is known for its colorful assortment of beasts and monsters, so it's only fitting that some of those creatures join the likes of Geralt and Imlerith in your collection. IGN can exclusively debut Dark Horse's next two Witcher figures - the Rock Troll and Werewolf. Get a closer look at both figures in the slideshow gallery below: As with the previous Witcher releases, these aren't technically articulated action figures so much as PVC statues. The Rock Troll measures 10 inches tall and the Werewolf measures 12 inches tall, so both pieces should have quite a bit of shelf presence. Both figures are based on the character designs in The...
Riot has released new Valorant agent Iso alongside a significant patch for its hugely popular team-based shooter. Riot said update 7.09 addresses issues in the balance of power between Sentinels, especially Cypher, and some other Agents on the roster. “Sentinels often craft very deliberate setups only to have Agents like Raze, Skye, and Fade destroy them with typical utility use,” Riot explained. “In this patch, we’re updating Cypher’s Trapwire (C) to try to sway these interactions more in his favor, and to encourage enemy Agents to have to be more intentional and deliberate if they aim to use their utility to counter Sentinel setups.” Here are the Valorant update 7.09 patch notes in full, per Riot Games: AGENT UPDATES ISO Iso...

Ubisoft is shutting down more online services for its older games like Assassin's Creed 2 and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood in January 2024. As reported by Eurogamer, an update on Ubisoft's support website confirmed the publisher is "decommissioning" the online services of these games on January 25. Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, Splinter Cell: Conviction, and Trials Evolution are also affected. "Decommissioning the online services for older games is something we do not take lightly, however, it is also a necessity as the technology behind these services becomes outdated," Ubisoft said. "As a result, we will decommission the online services of several games across different platforms on 25 January 2024." The publisher had previously...
Remedy has issued an update on all its in-development games while stressing it’s too early to comment on sales of the recently released Alan Wake 2. First up is an update on the Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes, which Remedy said in a financial report had “progressed into the production readiness stage”. “We have gained clarity on the style and scope of the game, and we have an exceptionally well-organized team working on it. With these accomplishments, we are excited about the project and its future success,” the studio added. Remedy is working with Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption company Rockstar under a new publishing agreement to remake the first two Max Payne games for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. Remedy is...
Destiny 2 expansion The Final Shape and the Marathon reboot have both reportedly been delayed amid lay-offs at developer Bungie. Sources familiar with the development process told Bloomberg the two projects had been pushed back. Though Bungie hasn't confirmed a delay officially, the Destiny 2 expansion is now expected in June 2024 instead of on February 27 as previously announced. Marathon, a sci-fi shooter revealed by Bungie in May 2023, wasn't given an official release window at the time but was delayed internally from 2024 to 2025 according to Bloomberg's sources. IGN has asked Bungie owner Sony for comment. Bungie was hit with lay-offs on October 30 affecting an undisclosed number of staff. "Today is a sad day at Bungie as we...
Remedy Entertainment has released a first update for hit survival horror sequel Alan Wake 2 and assured fans it's looking into the audio issues affecting Xbox users. The patch notes — for update 1.00.05 on PlayStation 5, 1.0.6 on PC, and 1.0.0.7 on Xbox Series X and S — don't get too specific about the changes they make, but promises multiple fixes for bugs, visual issues, UI-related issues, and localisation issues. Despite the different patch names, Remedy assured "there is now parity" between all three versions. A little unusually, the update also promises a "significantly friendlier error message when third-party software stops the game from starting" on PC. The latest patches don't address the main audio issues players have...
The Finals developer Embark Studios has responded to criticism from voice actors and developers after it was slammed for using AI voice overs in its hit shooter. The studio said "making games without actors isn't an end goal" and claimed it uses a mix of both recorded audio voices and audio generated via AI text to speech (TTS) tools for its games. "We use a combination of recorded voice audio and audio generated via TTS tools in our games, depending on the context," an Embark spokesperson told IGN. "Sometimes, recording real scenes where actors get together — allowing character chemistry and conflict to shape the outcome — is something that adds depth to our game worlds that technology can’t emulate. Other times, especially when it...
Paul Verhoeven’s RoboCop is one of the quintessential action movies of the 1980s. It pushed the envelope with over-the-top violence, killer one-liners, and fantastic special effects, mixed with a biting anti-corporate social commentary under the surface that resonated with audiences. There have been multiple attempts to resurrect the series over the years, including an ill-fated reboot in 2014, but nothing has captured the ephemeral “it” that struck a chord when the series debuted. That’s what is most impressive about RoboCop: Rogue City: it’s not just a solid first-person shooter set in the RoboCop universe – developer Teyon absolutely nails the look and feel of its film inspiration in ways that nothing else has. It’s a good game, and...
Dead Space 3 writer Chuck Beaver would redo the game’s story “almost completely” by focusing on a mentally broken Isaac Clark if he was ever approached about a potential remake. As reported by VGC, Beaver told YouTuber CaptainBribo he would keep some of the key lore elements of Dead Space 3, such as Tau Volantis and the enormous necromorphs known as the Brethren Moons, but would refocus the narrative on the travails of a mentally broken Isaac in the wake of the traumatic events of Dead Space 2. “I think though now in this remake territory, I would redo Dead Space 3 almost completely,” Beaver said. “Now we’re in the consequences of him being broken, and I would make it like a Tyler Durden [from Fight Club] thing [with] an unreliable...
Capcom is getting ready to launch a big game despite not having announced it yet, as the Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Street Fighter maker has an "unannounced major title" launching by March 2024. As reported by VG247, Capcom said during the questions and answers section of its recent financial results presentation that this unannounced title will allow it to reach its sales goal for the year. "In the second half of this financial year, we plan to release Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy in January in addition to a currently unannounced major title," Capcom said, translated by Reddit user hzy980512 and verified by IGN. "Moreover, we plan to boost the sales figures of new titles of the first half of this financial year, like...
Destiny 2 developer Bungie has reportedly been affected by lay-offs, becoming the latest in a long line of video game studios to undergo downsizing in 2023. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier said on X/Twitter that staff at the PlayStation Studios developer were informed of the lay-offs today, October 30. The number of people affected by the downsizing is unclear, though Bungie CEO Pete Parsons reportedly emailed staff this morning to notify them of a meeting where they would be told more. Though lay-offs aren't uncommon in the video game industry, 2023 has proven particularly brutal for developers as myriad studios have been affected. Dreams creator and fellow PlayStation Studios developer Media Molecule saw a reduction of 20 staff...
The Finals, which is currently trending on Steam after entering open beta, has faced criticism for using AI-generated voice overs instead of casting actors. Voice actor Gianni Matragrano, who appears in Evil West, Vertigo 2, and more, criticised developer Embark Studios' decision to use AI-generated voices on X/Twitter. Matragrano said the sound in The Finals "doesn't sound good", but he and other voice actors also highlighted the impact of AI on their livelihoods and the controversy around using it. Matragrano pointed to a July 2023 episode of Embark Studios' own Meet the Makers podcast, where two audio designers only referred to as Andreas and Carl confirmed they used "incredible" AI tools to create the voice overs in The Finals...
Stardew Valley is one of the most successful indie games of all time, with lifetime sales of over 20 million copies since its launch in 2016. Since then, developer ConcernedApe has expanded the brand to include new ventures such as the Stardew Valley board game and is currently working on his next game, Haunted Chocolatier. ConcernedApe, also known as Eric Barone, is now working with the Tokyo-based music company SOHO to bring Stardew Valley’s soundtrack to the orchestral realm with a live tour called Stardew Valley: Festival of Seasons. The tour will launch in 2024 starting in Los Angeles and will make its way around the world to places like South Korea and Australia. IGN sat down with Barone to talk about curating the tour’s...
