We’re only one night's sleep away from the release of Bandai Namco’s new RPG based on the late Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama’s underappreciated wasteland series, Sand Land. To celebrate the occasion, the game’s developers have shared a message written by the renowned manga creator before his passing in March. In his message, written in January this year, Toriyama admitted to not having had ample time to review all of Sand Land’s gameplay. He continued to praise the game for expanding on his 2000s wasteland manga, saying it is a high-quality standalone game as well as a “highly satisfying action-RPG game.” “First of all, the graphics have an excellent balance of the atmosphere of the manga and its drawn style. The representation...
Game developer Fallen Leaf recently partnered with Studios Extraordinaires to develop film and TV adaptations of their 2023 sci-fi shooter-thriller Fort Solis. Developed by Fallen Leaf and Black Drakkar, and published by Dear Villagers, Fort Solis takes place on the far side of Mars where engineer Jack Leary responds to a routine alarm at the titular outpost and his night only gets worse from there. Studios Extraordinaires’ André Hedetoft and Andreas Troedsson are attached to co-direct the Fort Solis adaptation. In this exclusive video – which can be viewed via the player above or the embed below – the creative duo brings fans of the game up to speed on the adaptation’s development and explains why they’re making it. Hedetoft and...
Blizzard has announced it will not hold its annual BlizzCon event in 2024, but promised the event will return in future years. In a statement to press, Blizzard failed to share the reason for the cancellation of the event, though it said the decision was "not made lightly." Additionally, the company plans to participate in other industry events throughout the year instead: This news comes just as BlizzCon was getting back on its feet. The event was fully canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, then returned briefly as a digital show in 2021 before going on hiatus again in 2022. Last year, BlizzCon was held again in-person for the first time in four years. While BlizzCon's cancellation may come as a shock to fans, it makes...
Aspyr has released Update 2 for Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection six weeks after its disastrous launch. Revealed on the Aspyr website, the patch includes improvements to all versions of the game as well as specific changes for the Steam, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch versions. Aspyr also said it's work on Update 3 "is beginning" but didn't say when fans should expect it, though Update 2 has arrived 37 days after Update 1. The list of changes is vast, with Update 2 including fixes to myriad problems including missing audio and visuals, overlapping textures, misfiring AI, gameplay not starting properly, lightsabers appearing too bright, the respawn counter getting stuck at one, and much more. Aspyr has also claimed to...
Fallout is having a moment. Thanks to the new Fallout TV show being met with universal acclaim, the eight-year-old Fallout 4 is once again topping sales charts. Folks are drawing Lucy MacLean fan art, arguing over whether New Vegas is the best one, giving Interplay’s 1997 original a try, and tweeting about how much they’d like to make out with a ghoul. As if all the excitement around the Amazon series wasn’t enough, Fallout 4 is also getting its long-awaited “next-gen update” for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC. Originally announced in 2022 for a ’23 release, the update brings performance and quality-mode settings to console, native ultrawide support on PC, Steam Deck verification, a new faction quest line, and more to...

Those who have Fallout 4 via PlayStation Plus do not appear to be able to download the next-gen update for free. Reports indicate that the Fallout 4 next-gen update (check out the patch notes here) is free only to those who own the post-apocalyptic adventure outright, as opposed to via the PS Plus subscription service. It is unclear if this is intentional or a bug. IGN has asked Bethesda for comment. This does not appear to be the case on Xbox Game Pass, where the native Xbox Series X and S version of Fallout 4 is available to subscribers. Fallout developer Bethesda, via its parent company ZeniMax, is owned by Xbox maker Microsoft. IGN has verified that PS Plus subscribers will see the PlayStation 4 version of Fallout 4 receive a...
Today the Tribeca Festival, which recognizes achievement across various entertainment mediums, announced their games lineup for 2024. The lineup includes some indie games we already know about, like the upcoming "comedy slapformer" Thank Goodness You're Here!, and a couple new games, like a narrative adventure called Goodnight Universe. All seven of the featured games will be playable in New York City's Pier 57 from June 12-16 later this year. The seven games are: Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure This tile-shifting puzzle game comes from indie developer Furniture & Matress, and follows a misfit girl named Jemma who leaves her cozy town in search of adventure. Blue Prince This atmospheric first-person game combines strategy...
The Fallout 4 next-gen update is rolling out now. The hotly anticipated next-gen update is available for Fallout 4 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, alongside an update for the PC version of Bethesda's post-apocalyptic open-world RPG. On PS5, the new native version of Fallout 4 (1.000.001) weighs in at 56.503 GB, according to early reports. In a tweet, Bethesda said access to both Creation Club and / or the Mods Menu are temporarily unavailable as it works to implement the update. At the time of this article's publication, these features were unavailable. The next-gen update includes native applications for the consoles, Performance mode and Quality mode settings, as well as stability improvements and fixes. This means the game...
I’m going to say it outright: If you don’t want politics in your games, then Frostpunk 2 is not for you. IGN went hands-on with the hotly (or coldly?) anticipated sequel’s sandbox mode, and it’s bigger on every level. Instead of constructing individual tents and sawmills, you’re building entire city districts. Populations grow by the thousands. Time is counted in weeks rather than days. And yes – the difficult choices you made in Frostpunk 1 are now a full-on game of politics that may have dire consequences for your city. Steampunk visions The developer says that this “Utopia Builder” sandbox build is 40% of the full Frostpunk 2 experience – but I think we’ll actually have more to look forward to, as this build felt like only a...
The allegedly cut ending of Assassin's Creed Mirage, which was set to make the series' already incredibly complicated meta story even more complex, is probably nothing to worry about according to Ubisoft. As reported by Eurogamer, a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" from Mirage art director Jean-Luc Sala saw one fan essentially ask if cut content found through a datamine was canon to the larger Assassin's Creed story. "All we can say is that what's not in your playthrough does not exist," Sala said, suggesting the cut content was cut for a reason and therefore bears no impact on the Assassin's Creed stories that have actually been released. He followed up with a winking emoji, however, perhaps just to leave fans a little on edge. The cut...
Amid the hit Fallout TV show, all Fallout video games are enjoying a boost in players. Indeed, some people are stepping out into the virtual wasteland for the first time, including into Obsidian’s much-loved 2010 RPG, Fallout New Vegas. But in-keeping with the tone of the Fallout video games, some veterans of the post-apocalyptic Mojave are having dastardly fun with bright-eyed and bushy-tailed newcomers. Spoiler warning for Fallout New Vegas follows. Across social media, some New Vegas fans are advising new players that they should visit Quarry Junction, promising good starting gear at the location. Quarry Junction is along the short route to the Strip, New Vegas’ standout location, so on the face of it it makes sense to stop by...
Netflix has released a trailer for its upcoming Jennifer Lopez starring sci-fi film Atlas and fans of the Titanfall video game franchise are noticing a lot of similarities between the two. The two minute trailer shows off Lopez's Atlas Shepard fleeing from certain death in a giant mech akin to those seen in Titanfall, or more specifically its sequel, which was the first to feature a campaign. While this concept wasn't necessarily new at the time of Titanfall 2's release either, fans have spotted "pretty glaring" callouts to the game. Reddit user dravacotron pointed these out. A line in the trailer for the Netflix film sees the mech Smith tell pilot Atlas that "my primary protocol is to keep you alive". Titanfall 2's scene where the...
The Fallout TV show has sparked a number of fan theories. There’s speculation about the Snake Oil Salesman’s mysterious serum, for example. Some believe the Brotherhood of Steel’s airship confirms one of two Fallout 4 endings as canon. And let’s not forget the theory that the Fallout TV show’s biggest bombshell may in fact be a misdirection. As the speculation about what’s in store for fans with the already confirmed Fallout Season 2, as well as its impact on Fallout canon, a fresh debate has emerged: which of the main characters are synths? Warning: spoilers for Fallout Season 1 and Fallout 4 follow. Fans of the Fallout video games have noticed the Fallout TV show fails to include a number of iconic creatures, characters, and...
Capcom has announced plans to pay out more money to its shareholders after the breakout success of Dragon’s Dogma 2. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a big hit for Capcom, selling 2.5 million copies across PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S in just 11 days. The sprawling action role-playing game went on sale on March 22, and Capcom announced Dragon’s Dogma 2 had passed 2.5 million sold on April 2. Total Dragon’s Dogma franchise sales have now exceeded 10 million units, Capcom added. To put Dragon’s Dogma 2’s sales into context, it took the first Dragon’s Dogma game a month to sell 1.05 million units after it went on sale at the end of May 2012, a tally Capcom declared a success at the time. Now, Capcom has revised its...
Capcom has released a new update for its open-world fantasy game Dragon’s Dogma 2 that nerfs the dragonsplague, among other things. Dragon’s Dogma’s pesky dragonsplague illness turns pawns murderous but only exhibited a few subtle symptoms up to now (modders had already made things really obvious for PC players by sticking a big number on the follower's forehead). The title update, out now across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, reduces the infection frequency of dragonsplague and adjusts the signs of pawns infected with dragonsplague to be more noticeable. For example, when infected, glowing eyes will be more noticeable, Capcom said in the patch notes. Elsewhere, there are adjustments to pawn behavior and dialogue...
The developer of Garry's Mod has announced it is in the process of removing all Nintendo-related content from Steam Workshop after receiving a takedown request from Nintendo. In a posting to Steam, Facepunch Studios confirmed the takedowns were in fact legitimate - perhaps in contrast to previous takedowns this year thought to be sent by a fraudster. Facepunch added that the request was "fair enough" given that the content does belong to Nintendo, but noted that the process would take time as "we have 20 years of uploads to go through." "If you want to help us by deleting your Nintendo related uploads and never uploading them again, that would help us a lot," Facepunch wrote. Nintendo has historically been extremely protective of...
Manor Lords brings its in-depth medieval city-building to early access in just two days, so publisher Hooded Horse took the time to explain why it hasn’t announced pricing information yet. While many players would’ve expected to see some sort of update by now, it’s still not clear how much Manor Lords will actually cost to purchase. Hooded Horse CEO Tim Bender explained why fans have been left waiting in a Reddit post. He explains that the issue is a matter of managing expectations. “Manor Lords, like all other games on Steam, will not have one price,” he says. “It will have regional prices that distribute across the world. These aren’t just different currencies — there are large regions of the world where Steam uses US Dollar...
Decades after it took place, the Chornobyl disaster remains so ingrained in the public imagination that it's easy to forget its terrible real-world consequences. But Chornobyl Liquidators, a new immersive sim set to release in June, aims to delve into some of that history in what developer Live Motion Games calls a "commemoration of the disaster and its victims." A new gameplay trailer released by Live Motion Games and publisher Frozen Way highlights how the new historical sim will put players in the boots of the Liquidators — the firefighters, soldiers, and other personnel who were called in to deal with the consequences of the 1986 nuclear disaster. According to the official release, it will use historical documents and other items...
Moon Studios CEO Thomas Mahler has taken the time to sing the praises of early access, going as far as to say that FromSoftware’s seminal action RPG, Dark Souls, might have benefited from the communication-driven model if it had been around upon its release. The Ori and the Blind Forest developer spoke about how the studio has utilized early access for its upcoming action title, No Rest for the Wicked, in a post on X/Twitter. Mahler says that releasing the pre-release version of its game in this way is “one of the best decisions we could have made.” He even goes as far as to say that Moon wouldn’t be able to ship its eventual 1.0 build without feedback from fans. “I think as games become more and more complex and sophisticated, we'll...
Developer Tarock Interactive has announced Lost Legions, a new open-world survival crafting game for PC for up to four players that, according to Tarock, is "set after the true events of the Varian disaster in a hand-crafted world inspired by the German region of Teutoburg Forest." It's due out in the first half of 2025. In the game's brutal times, you'll traverse multiple biomes including frigid mountains and dense forests while facing down barbarian tribes and very large animals who aren't thrilled you're on their turf. You'll need to craft tools, build camps, and fight to survive in your quest to recover Rome's three lost banners of the fallen Legions. Check out the announcement trailer above and the first few exclusive screenshots...
Game adaptations are a tricky business. In trying to capture the spirit of a comic, show, or movie while also abiding by the conventions often demanded of a video game, something is likely to get lost in the translation. Sand Land, the open-world adaptation of the titular manga by the late, great Akira Toriyama, is a prime example of such a case. In many respects, it's wonderful to see the world of Sand Land at this scale with some of its original charm coming through at key moments, and its emphasis on vehicles for exploration and combat gives it a unique gameplay focus. But the majority of its roughly 25-hour runtime equates to a very by-the-numbers action-adventure, where everything else around it – from storytelling to quest design...
It’s wonderfully ironic that the biggest breath of fresh air the soulslike genre has received in years comes from an adventure that takes place entirely underwater. Where most dodge-rolling action games are drab, bloody, and edgelordian, Another Crab’s Treasure is bursting with bright colors, cartoonish sea creatures, and silly humor. That extreme departure from serious and spooky vibes makes it standout in an increasingly crowded space, even when it follows the formula extremely closely in every other regard. It suffers from overly simplistic combat, a general lack of challenge, and some bugs and camera wonkiness now and again – but with memorable characters, an extremely enjoyable story, and lots of original ideas, Another Crab’s...

Gazing out across my lively medieval burgh in Manor Lords, I see great promise. The detailed buildings, villagers, and landscapes are always pleasant to look upon. The complex, rewarding, if not necessarily precision-balanced economy is entertaining and intuitive to interact with. And the war cries of my homegrown militia, off to bash some bandits, remind me that each bloody clash is costing someone a son or a husband. But for all its potential, Manor Lords is an extremely Early Access-feeling Early Access game at this point. Sometimes, it even seems more like a proof of concept than a finished product. There is fun to be had in this initial release of Manor Lords. The freedom to lay out bustling streets and market squares, putting...

Helldivers 2’s current Major Order to successfully defend 10 planets across Terminid and Automaton space has put Hellmire in the firing line once again, and it looks like players would really rather not have to deal with it. For the uninitiated, Arrowhead’s explosive third-person co-op shooter tasks the Helldivers 2 community with completing various challenges as part of the ongoing Galactic War, a meta narrative driven by Game Master Joel. Amid this latest Major Order, which looks increasingly likely to fail, players are faced with dropping onto perhaps the most-hated planet in the game right now: the appropriately named Hellmire. Hellmire suffers from a near-constant cycle of fires, which cause players a number of problems, not...
Valve has updated the Steam refund policy to essentially close a loophole which allowed players to accrue several hours of playtime through advanced access then receive a full refund at launch. The refund policy now includes a revised "refunds on titles purchased prior to release date" section, which adds an official Advanced Access label and essentially applies Valve's normal two hour time limit to these games. Advanced Access refers to games which can be played ahead of their official launch, usually by purchasing a special edition at additional cost. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, for example, launched on February 2, 2024 but those who paid an additional $30 for the Deluxe Edition could play it three days earlier. Its...
Elite Dangerous developer Frontier has announced a significant change to the near decade-old space sim: the sale of ships for real money. In a post on the Elite Dangerous website, Frontier said it will sell three months of early access to the Python Mk II ship from May 7 for 16,250 ARX, the game’s premium virtual currency. 16,800 ARX costs $12.99 from the store. Owners of the Odyssey expansion can buy the ship from August 7 for credits, Elite's non-premium virtual currency. Those who do not own Odyssey can only access ship variants from the store for ARX. Frontier is also selling Pre-Built Ship packages, which include ships that have been upgraded from their base models. “We envision these Pre-built Ships to be a quicker way for...
