John Romero, the renowned video game designer known for his pioneering work on the likes of Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, and Quake, released a memoir last year that is now getting adapted for the silver screen. As reported by Deadline, two projects are in the works based on Romero's autobiography Doom Guy: Life in First Person. The first is a documentary created by award-winning Canadian filmmaker Rob McCallum, and the second is a scripted drama series about the life and storied career of video gaming's original rock star. Naomi Harvey, executive producer of both projects under her Golden Possum Productions banner, said, "John's story is incredibly powerful—not just the part about the revolutionary games he created, but his profound impact...
Minecraft's highly anticipated Tricky Trials update arrives as version 1.21 on June 13, 2024. Revealed on the Minecraft blog, Mojang confirmed all platforms, meaning PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch, mobile, and more, would receive the update simultaneously. The update's main addition is the mysterious, massive copper trial chambers which are full of "a slew of new challenges, mobs to do battle with, rewards to claim, and blocks to build with. "Players will find two new mobs, the Breeze and the Bogged alongside loot-filled vaults that can be unlocked with trial keys (and reward every player, not just the one who opens them). These trial chambers have an optional ominous trial feature, which triggers more difficult trials when...
Bethesda director and executive producer Todd Howard has called once panned Fallout 76 "sneaky popular" now that it's crossed 20 million players. Speaking to Variety, Howard confirmed the 20 million number was passed on May 29, 2024: almost six years after the game was released. "It’s kind of been sneaky popular for a while, but not to this level and it’s just been really great for the for the whole studio,” Howard said. Amazon's Fallout TV show, which arrived in April 2024, was credited with Fallout 76's recent popularity, with Howard saying it's effect is like nothing he's ever seen. "Depending on the Fallout game, you’re looking at a four to six times increase in daily players, which is beyond anything I’ve ever seen in my 30...
Bandai Namco unveiled a new character trailer for its hotly anticipated 3D fighting game, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. Much like past themed character trailers, this one centered on the mega-popular shonen series’ smorgasbord of fusion characters. First up is Goku and Vegeta’s rambunctious Saiyan kids, Goten and Trunks. The pair premiered in Dragon Ball Z’s Buu arc, where the pair fused, forming the formidable Gotenks. Unlike most Saiyans, their move set is pretty unorthodox. Key among them is the Super Donut, an ability that turns enemies into a volleyball, and Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack, which, as its name suggests, spews explosive ghost clones from their mouth. Kale and Caulifla, Saiyans from Universe 6, were first introduced...
A MultiVersus leak has seemingly given fans a glimpse of what characters they can expect in the future, with Aquaman, the Powerpuff Girls, and even characters from anime all featured. Twitter/X user @KrustyandUG found a handful of videos of Rick and Morty's Rick which featured voice lines referencing the currently unannounced characters. Marceline the Vampire Queen from Adventure Time is another character referenced in these voice lines, where Rock says things like: "Well, well, well if it isn't Marceline the Emo Queen." This character was teased in the MultiVersus launch trailer while Aquaman and the Powerpuff Girls have been leaked previously. Rick also references an "anime crossover", however, which has added more fuel to the...
It turns out Lords of the Fallen's final 1.5 update released in April 2024 wasn't the final update at all as developer Hexworks has released the Clash of Champions downloadable content which adds a boss rush mode to the game. As reported by Gematsu, the surprise release doesn't include just one version of the boss rush mode but two. Players can choose to either fight through the Echoes of Battle or Crucible modes, with the former offering a chance to relive boss encounters and the latter presenting a unique new challenging of increasing difficulty. "The update features two previously unannounced boss rush modes for the dark fantasy action RPG," publisher CI Games said. "Players can now replay singular boss battles with previously...
Those looking forward to Destiny 2: The Final Shape's launch on June 4, 2024 should perhaps stay off the internet for a few days as a mishap at PlayStation-owned Bungie saw the entire expansion release early and spoilers spread like wildfire. As reported by Eurogamer, dozens of players took to social media to share their shock and horror after discovering the highly anticipated expansion, set to be the grand finale in Destiny 2's so far 10 year saga, was available to play on May 29 after server maintenance. Those who chose to stream Destiny 2 instead of play a downloaded version, like Cupcake_0f_Doom on Reddit, were loaded straight into the new content. I tried loading it up tonight and at first I thought cross save was bugged and...
Hogwarts Legacy developer Avalanche Software has announced its summer update brings photo mode, a Hogsmeade quest, and more to the game on June 6. In a post on X/Twitter, below, Avalanche shared a look at what players can expext in the update, with those on Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch, and PC getting the most out of it as the currently PlayStation exclusive Haunted Hogsmeade quest becomes playable for all. Photo mode is another major addition, with Avalanche showing off a wealth of different options digital photographers will have. A major quality of life feature arrives too, as players will be able to reset their Talent Points when the update is made available. It otherwise includes some additional cosmetic items, such as...
Netflix has announced and released a short teaser trailer for a Minecraft animated series coming to the streaming service "soon". Announced during the 15th year anniversary celebration for the beloved survival sandbox game, the Minecraft animated series will feature an original story, new characters, and showcase the world of Minecraft in a new light. WildBrain, the studio behind other Netflix shows such as Sonic Prime, Ninjago: Dragons Rising, and Carmen Sandiego, will create the CG-animated series. The short teaser trailer, above, doesn't give much away but opens with the series' most iconic mascot as a Creeper comes on screen before blowing up. The camera then moves through streams of lava in the Nether before emerging into a...
The protagonist of Dungeons of Hinterberg is at a crossroads in her life. Feeling burnt out by her big city job, Luisa travels to the easygoing town of Hinterberg, Austria, to check out the sights, cut loose in the social scene, and try her hand at monster slaying to score some sweet loot. Dungeons of Hinterberg is what you get when you combine the cozy vibes of a Persona-style social-sim RPG with the sprawling adventure of The Legend of Zelda – and all wrapped in a charming package that strikes a chord for those longing for a break. In my extended preview of developer Microbird Games' action- RPG, I got to play the early hours of this oddball yet delightfully charming dungeon crawler that tasks you with making the most of your...
Today's all about PlayStation cutting loose and lopping prices in its Days of Play promotion. Aside from the obvious chops on current AAAs, the discount I'd steer you towards would be that 60% off Fallout 4 GOTY. Weirdly, PS folk missed out on the cheaper price of that during the "Fallout TV series" buzz season. So loot it now. In retro news, I'm celebrating the 11th birthday of GRiD 2, a weirdly capitalised racer that nonetheless delivered. Codemasters popped the hood on this sequel and bolted in a new 'TrueFeel' handling system, hoping to hit the apex between realism and accessibility. Personally, I remember it having Bathurst DLC, lacking a cockpit view, veering more arcadey than I liked, and it featured pretty kick arse terminal...
A Heads On Test of the Turtle Beach Atlas Air, Current Best Prices, and More!
Whenever it comes time to assess a new Turtle Beach headset, I try to play a game of Guess This Model’s Intent based on the buzzwords used by Marketing. Today’s subject was a mixed-signals affair that stumped me. The ‘Air’ half clearly pertains to the impressive cloud-like comfort of these earcup cushions. But ‘Atlas’ speaks of a load-bearing Titan who, despite being a reliable sort that Greeks of quality, must endure crippling weight. All day. Every day. Forever. So which one is it? The first, thankfully. I’ve sampled tons of headsets in my time, but the Atlas Air—weighing at a class-leading 301g—are among the comfiest cans I’ve ever used. At a glance, you should consider them a barely there, open-back solution for my kind of...
Stellar Blade, the third-person action game by developer Shift Up, was the best-selling video game in the U.S. in April 2024. Mat Piscatella, executive director of video games at Circana, noted in the latest report that Stellar Blade was the only new release in April 2024 that ranked "among the month's top 20 best-selling premium video games," beating out other new releases in April, such as Sand Land and Another Crab's Treasure. Additional games that made the top 20 best-selling games for April 2024 include Helldivers 2, Fallout 4, and Tekken 8. Piscatella further elaborated on the April 2024 report, explaining in a post on X/Twitter that although it was a great achievement for Stellar Blade to rank first in U.S. sales last month...
City 20 is an upcoming survival sandbox adventure game that puts you in a quarantined secret city, one where nuclear work was done, after a radiological disaster of some kind has cut it off from the outside world. Waking up with your own past a mystery, you're tasked to survive among the factions of people that have formed in this little, localized apocalypse. The developers have tried to create a world inspired by classics like Stalker, The Road, and La Jetée. So far so good, right? These are all things I like to hear. I recently sat down with a demo build of the in-progress game and got a look at how it's going so far. The first thing that really strikes me about City 20 is the art style. It's confident and decisive, to my eyes...
It’s probably the funniest joke in Capes – which has a lot of pretty good superhero jokes – that not one of your eight playable characters actually wears a cape. This clever and challenging turn-based tactical game does wear its heart on its sleeve, though, and a clear love of the comics that inspired it comes across as it makes its underdog vigilante squad feel powerful with creative combo mechanics. It’s a style of battle that gives you almost all the information and lets you execute a surefire plan in a way that reminds me of Into the Breach more than it does XCOM. Every level is a tactical puzzle that tells you almost everything that’s going to happen next turn up front, and winning is all about countering the enemy’s moves...

Cyberpunk 2077 will get the long promised FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR3) support at some point, developer CD Projekt Red has confirmed. Speaking to IGN, the developer confirmed FSR3 — the latest iteration of AMD's supersampling technology which increases the frame rate of a game — would still be released despite announcing it no longer had a dedicated Cyberpunk 2077 team. "We are still working on the FSR3 support for Cyberpunk 2077, but I do not have an update on its availability just yet," a CD Projekt Red spokesperson told IGN. "We are still working on the FSR3 support for Cyberpunk 2077. Fans were left questioning whether the promised update would ever arrive after the developer told investors its Cyberpunk 2077 team had...
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Season 4 launches today, May 29, and Activision has published the patch notes for fans to check out all the changes. As detailed in a blog post, Season 4 brings with it a number of balance adjustments, gameplay improvements, and bug fixes. Two new maps, Tokyo and Paris, are added at the launch of Season 4, with more Multiplayer maps (Incline and Das Gross) to come later in-season. New modes include Demolition, Hyper Cranked, Cache, Mutation, Headshots Only, and Havoc. Elsewhere, there are new weapons, including the return of the fan-favorite Kar98k marksman rifle, available with the Season 4 battle pass. There’s also the Superi 46 (Battle Pass, Submachine Gun), and Reclaimer 18 (Battle Pass, Shotgun...
MultiVersus has finally launched fully after the open beta (which many didn't realize was an open beta) shut down in June 2023, and while its return has attracted more than 100,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, it's also sparked many complaints. Data from player-tracking website SteamDB shows MultiVersus — the Warner Bros. brawler where Gizmo from Gremlins, Rick and Morty, Lebron James, Batman, Arya Stark, Bugs Bunny, Shaggy, Tom and Jerry, Jason, and more can all fight — hit a 24 hour peak of 114,515 concurrent players upon its May 28, 2024 launch day. It's a strong start for the free-to-play brawler on PC (Sony and Microsoft do not publish player numbers for PlayStation and Xbox.) Not everyone is happy with the changes...
Mortal Kombat 1 Reveals Homelander Gameplay, Fatalities, and a First Look at Ferra
Warner Bros. Games has revealed gameplay for Homelander, the next DLC character for Mortal Kombat 1. Homelander, who is based on the supervillain from Prime Video’s mega hit show The Boys, appears as a guest DLC character in NetherRealm’s gory fighting game, and based on the gameplay trailer below, the ‘evil Superman’ is a good fit. Here's the official blurb on Homelander: If you can get through Homelander’s disgusting milk-drinking victory pose, you’ll see he uses his famous laser eyes in much of his combo building, as a launcher, an interrupt, as well as a combo extender. Indeed, the laser eyes are the basis of one of Homelander’s Fatalities, which we get a glimpse at at the end of the clip. Mortal Kombat 1 fans have wondered...
No Man’s Sky’s next big update, Adrift, lets people explore an abandoned universe with all other lifeforms stripped out. Adrift lets players experience Hello Games’ long-running space exploration game in an alternative universe in which they can be truly alone for the first time. Adrift removes all NPCs, which means no shops, no trading, no shortcuts, and no help. This makes for a more dangerous survival experience, Hello Games said, with sandworms now roaming free and fiend eggs spreading across planets. Buildings are broken and rusted, and the worlds are littered with graves of lost travelers. “In space a new ghostly frigate beckons for players who wish to unravel the mystery at the heart of this new universe,” Hello Games teased...
Forza Horizon may soon have some competition. Amazon Games announced today that it has struck a deal with Maverick Games for a "narrative-led open-world driving game," which is set to release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Maverick Games, a studio spearheaded by numerous Playground Games veterans, is leading development on the new project. The studio's leadership includes Forza Horizon 5 creative director Mike Brown. "We founded Maverick Games with a clear vision: to build a developer-first studio that would foster an environment of creativity and risk-taking," Brown said in a statement. "This approach empowers our team to produce the most exceptional work of their careers. And ultimately, that means we are creating a...
Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead is in the process of setting the studio up so it can “make more and better stuff” in the long-term, the company’s new CEO has said. In an introductory post on reddit, CEO Shams Jorjani, who recently replaced previous Arrowhead CEO and current Chief Creative Officer Johan Pilestedt, said the studio has had to adjust to the enormous success and higher profile Helldivers 2 has brought to the company. PlayStation 5 and PC co-op shooter Helldivers 2 is the fastest-selling PlayStation game of all time, having shifted an incredible 12 million copies in just 12 weeks since going on sale earlier this year. Amid the huge revenue Helldivers 2 has generated, Arrowhead itself has suffered a number of crisis...
In the aftermath of the release of Call of Duty Black Ops 6’s live-action reveal trailer, fans have unearthed a number of secrets, Easter eggs, and hidden details — and perhaps even a pointer to the game’s first Zombies map. Activision’s marketing so far has revolved around teasing fans with cryptic nods to the Gulf War of the early ‘90s, and the trailer, below, continues the conspiracy theories with a few words of wisdom from world leaders central to the military action that took place in Iraq during the decade. Former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush, as well as ex-UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Iraq leader Saddam Hussein, combine to utter words from the shadows that allude to some grand conspiracy the...
A high-profile video game cheat maker has been ordered to pay Activision over $14 million in damages and hand over its domain name. The United States District Court of the Central District of California granted Activision’s motion for default judgement in the civil case against EngineOwning, which sells cheats for a number of Call of Duty games as well as Counter-Strike, Battlefield, and Titanfall. Activision is awarded $14,465,600 in statutory damages and $292,912 in attorneys’ fees, and the court issued a permanent injunction to enjoin EngineOwning’s “unlawful conduct” and to transfer its domain name, www.EngineOwning.to, to Activision. Activision successfully argued that EngineOwning continued to circumvent its security systems...
Along with my usual batch of the best deals of the day, the big news is the dropping of the first official Legend of Zelda LEGO set. Hope you have unlocked your Giant's Wallet because the RRP of this 2-in-1 set is deku nuts. Still, being able to shift it from a Breath of the Wild theme to the old GOAT Ocarina of Time is much appreciated. League of Legends fans are having a hard time wrapping their heads around a new bundle that costs roughly $450. The content is themed after prolific League of Legends player Lee ‘Faker’ Sang-hyeok and arrives alongside news that he has been inducted into Riot’s hall of fame, the Hall of Legends. In a post on its website, the studio explains that it worked with the eSports legend to create an event pass celebrating his legacy. Festivities include three new Ahri Collections with prices that are turning heads. Each bundle is more expensive than the last, beginning with the Risen Legend Collection at 5430 RP or around $40. It includes the Hall of Legends Pass, a Takedown Counter Taunt, an icon, an emote, a banner, and Ahri with a unique...
Until Then Wants to Become a Portal to Filipino Culture For Everyone
AAPI Month coverage continues with an interview with Polychroma Games about their Phillipines-set story game, Until Then, coming out on June 25. Even in its demo, Until Then rang plenty of bells for me as a Filipino-American. It reminded me of summer breaks when I would visit Manila, but with a fondness that outdid any discomfort I would have from walking under the sweltering heat and dodging cockroaches on the sidewalk. From colored chicks to bits of Tagalog, Filipino culture deepened the immersiveness of the story between the playful characterization and mini games. This is the setting that Mickole Klein Nulud, founder of Polychroma Games and game director of Until Then, and his team sought to capture. Mark Borja is seemingly just...
It has been a long journey for Destiny over the last decade (that’s right: Destiny turns 10 years old in September!). It’s a journey that spanned two console generations and three publishers (first Activision, then Bungie itself, and now Sony). Hell, I met my wife, got married, and had two kids since I started my journey as a Guardian. The point is, it’s been a hell of a ride for the Destiny faithful, and this finale of the Light and Darkness saga has a lot riding on it for players who’ve followed this game since the beginning. And Bungie wants to surprise and delight their fans with something special for the end of the Light and Darkness saga. The team invited us to play a handful of story missions, dive into Prismatic, try the...
