Elden Ring: Nightreign's previously-rumored ultra-hard difficulty mode is real and official, according to Bandai Namco, and it's coming to the game on September 11. As announced in an official post, the new mode is called "Deep of Night" and is essentially a challenge mode of the base game. While previously, Nightreign's ongoing challenging endgame content has been limited to more difficult bosses, Deep of Night will impact an entire run, from start to finish. For one, enemies will just be stronger than normal across the board. You also won't get a heads up about which Nightlord you'll be fighting, nor will you know if you're getting a Shifting Earth event in advance, so you won't be able to prep a build for any specific type of run...
Final Fantasy 14's community is once again in a tizzy about the use of mods in game, to the point where the game's producer and director, Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P), has weighed in. First, some background. While modding is an extremely common practice across many games, including other MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy 14 has always had a slightly more hostile relationship with them. That's not to say players don't use mods in FF14 - they absolutely do. But officially, they're not allowed. Even so, Square Enix has largely operated for a long time on a policy of letting mods slide...as long as players aren't too loud or obvious about it. So players might use mods to customize their UIs, or change the way their character looks...
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 publisher Focus Entertainment has lifted the lid on the game’s second year of DLC, confirming patches 10 all the way up to 15. Space Marine 2 is set for a hefty Anniversary Update on September 4, when patch 10 will add a playable Helbrute in PvP, three new weapons, the Chaos Spawn enemy, and the Black Templars Champion Pack. But we also have content confirmation for patches 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15, which takes us up to the end of the second quarter of next year (June 2026). There’s plenty to note in here for fans, but highlights include the new Techmarine class, now set for release during the first quarter of 2026, a new Battle Barge expansion during the same period, and a new Siege map coming Q2 2026...
In one of the more wholesome video game stories of the year, veteran Helldivers 2 players who’ve seen and done it all on PC and PlayStation 5 are helping out Xbox newcomers, with player numbers hitting new heights. Arrowhead’s Sony-published third-person co-op shooter launched on Xbox Series X and S this week, and, according to the CEO of the developer, concurrents hit an incredible 500,490 players across all platforms. But Helldivers 2’s community is celebrating another milestone: the coming together of all players to help out new recruits on Xbox. Helldivers 2, as anyone who's played it for more than a few hours will know, can be a panic-inducing experience, with deliberately fussy controls and a level of complexity that can make...
You may have spotted the brand new trailer for GRYPHLINE's upcoming game Arknights: Endfield, a real-time 3D RPG with strategic gameplay elements, during Opening Night Live, but there was certainly no missing the game's presence on the show floor at gamescom. As one of the leading game companies from China making a strong push onto the global stage, GRYPHLINE came prepared. The Arknights: Endfield booth in Hall 8, was a sight to behold. From the three giant LED screens to the towering installation facing the main hallway, the message was clear: this is a world they want you to step into. And judging by the crowds gathered, it worked. GRYPHLINE recreated one of the key locations in the game, which will be released on PlayStation, PC...
Warhammer 40,000 fans were likely delighted to see Dawn of War 4 announced with a flashy CGI trailer at Gamescom 2025’s Opening Night Live, but they’ll surely have noticed one of the series’ most important characters is MIA. Gabriel Angelos, Chapter Master of the Blood Ravens and essentially the protagonist of the original Dawn of War trilogy, is nowhere to be seen. And so when I had the opportunity to talk to Jan Theysen, Dawn of War 4’s creative director and the co-founder of developer King Art Games, I knew I had to ask where the big guy was. “That was actually one of the decisions we made relatively early. We don't want Gabriel Angelos in the game,” Theysen told me. That’s a pretty major exclusion. Gabriel Angelos has been part...
Gamescom’s Opening Night Live is, by its very nature, a show that thrives on big surprises, but few would have tuned in expecting to see Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4. After all, a remaster of the original game had only just arrived days prior, and developer Relic Entertainment – now independent after a decade-plus of being owned by Sega – didn’t seem ready to deliver a massive new Warhammer RTS anytime soon. Not that it needed to be ready, of course. This was a double-hit surprise: not only is Dawn of War 4 real, but it is being developed by a completely different studio from the rest of the series, King Art Games. How did this happen? And why, in the lavish new CGI trailer, is there no sign of Gabriel Angelos, the Space Marine...
Hell is Us is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing action-adventure titles in recent memory. With its striking visuals, tense atmosphere, and a focus on raw exploration, it looks set to carve out a space as one of 2025’s most unique games. If you’re curious about what to expect, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about Hell Is Us – including its release date, gameplay, story, editions, pre-order bonuses, and the latest trailer. Hell is Us Release Date Hell is Us will launch worldwide on September 4, 2025. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. At this stage, no Nintendo Switch 2 version has been announced, and given the technical scope of the game, it seems unlikely that a port...
I’ve been rifling through the latest discounts, and today seems fairly McChockers with heavy hitters across all platforms. From magical duels to space-faring shootouts, the bargains are diverse and genuinely tempting. Enough preamble, though. I'd much rather be saving than typing. Contents Retro Nintendo Xbox PlayStation PC LEGO This Day in Gaming 🎂 In retro news, I’m lighting 17 candles on a cake baked for Trauma Center: Second Opinion, the surgical sim that turned my Wiimote into a scalpel for better or worse. (Mostly worse.) Back in 2008, few games dared to marry high-stakes medical drama with twitchy motion-controlled gameplay, and yet Atlus did just that, handing us the scalpel, forceps, and adrenaline shots to save lives...
Much like all-you-can-eat Pizza Huts, reasonably-priced concert tickets, and The Secret World of Alex Mack, Screamer is something I enjoyed in the 1990s but essentially disappeared from our lives decades ago. The original Screamer, released in 1995, was one of a trio of games developed by Italian studio Graffiti before it quickly rebranded itself as Milestone a year later. An over-the-top arcade racing game exclusively for PC, it arrived rapidly in the slipstream of pioneering 3D racers like The Need for Speed, Ridge Racer, and Destruction Derby (and was followed by a sequel and two one-and-done spin-offs) but has faded into relative obscurity since. However, over a quarter of a century since Milestone’s final Screamer game, the series...
It's hard to believe it's been four years since I first set sail and fell in love with Valheim. As a fan of survival crafting and all things Norse, it's one of the best experiences out there in both regards. And while it still feels fairly familiar at the outset – and somehow it’s still calling itself “early access,” whatever that means anymore – it's gotten a mountain of patches since launch, with a list of changes that would take longer to read than the rambling tangent about some side character's great-grandfather in a viking saga. From new biomes and new bosses to crafting and combat improvements, the version of Valheim you can download today cuts like a blade that developer Iron Gate has been sharpening winter in and winter out...
Crystal Dynamics has laid off an unknown number of workers following the cancelation of Perfect Dark by Microsoft. In a statement on LinkedIn, Crystal Dynamics confirmed the layoffs, but did not specify the number of people impacted. "Today we made the very difficult decision to part ways with a number of our talented colleagues as the result of evolving business conditions," the statement reads. "This decision was not made lightly. It was necessary, however, to ensure the long-term health of our studio and core creative priorities in a continually shifting market." The company also confirmed that Tomb Raider, still in development, was unaffected by the decision. While the statement does not explicitly mention Perfect Dark as the...
We all know Fortnite is the king of crossovers, but the tables have turned in recent years, with Fortnite crossing over into LEGO territory. We've had a handful of sets come out that represent the weird and whacky world of one of the most popular battle royale games, like the Durrr Burger and iconic Battle Bus. The most recent set, which dropped earlier this month, is the gigantic Mecha Team Leader. I'm not the biggest Fortnite player, but even I can't deny how much fun this build was. The LEGO Fortnite Mecha Team Leader is easily the biggest build I've done here on IGN. When the box arrived in the mail I was genuinely surprised at its size. Coming in at just under two feet, the box is absolutely massive. The set itself is comprised...
Ghost Story Games must have sensed that we were becoming antsy about Judas, the upcoming game from BioShock creator Ken Levine that's touted an impressive-sounding "narrative LEGOs" approach. The studio has dropped the first of seemingly multiple Dev Logs today, with this one talking about the game's complex, Shadow of Mordor-like "Villainy" system. Levine has been alluding to the game's Shadow of Mordor inspirations ever since he first teased Judas waaaaay back in 2017. At the time, he said that he wanted to do a more ambitious version of the game's Nemesis system, which allowed players to form relationships with orcs they fought and developed them into characters with motivations, special abilities, and more. It's a system that's...
Christophe Gans’ Return to Silent Hill is hitting theaters in January 2026, just in time for the 20th anniversary of the original Silent Hill movie. This is good news, given that Silent Hill still ranks as one of the better video game movie adaptations to date. 2012’s Silent Hill: Revelation? Not so much. Cineverse just released a short first teaser for Return to Silent Hill, offering a glimpse of the many horrors Jeremy Irvine’s James Sunderland will face as he navigates the town in search of his missing wife. Given that so much time has passed since Gans last set foot in the moody town of Silent Hill, you might be wondering how this sequel is connected to its predecessors. Is it a direct continuation of Silent Hill and Silent Hill...
Starfield developer Bethesda has finally teased some of the upcoming changes coming to the game, confirming improvements to space gameplay “to make the travels there more rewarding.” Earlier this month, fragments of code uncovered by Starfield fans suggested Bethesda had a more streamlined space travel experience in the works, though potentially still with some caveats. While you may be able to travel between planets within the same system, fans said it looked like you wouldn’t be able to fly all the way between systems. And it looks like you won’t be able to fly directly from a planet's surface into orbit, like No Man's Sky. References to the new offering, referred to in the game's code as "Cruise Mode," were detected by players and...
Sony has announced its PlayStation Plus monthly lineup of games for September 2025, which includes a Xbox-published title and a hugely popular farming sim. Further solidifying the friendship between Xbox and PlayStation, next month's list is headlined by Psychonauts 2, the platform-adventure from Tim Schafer's Doublefine Studios, which is of course owned by Microsoft. This quirky sequel launched to positive reviews (and no, you don't need to have played the first). Next up is Stardew Valley, the charming life and farming simulation which really doesn't need much introduction. If you don't yet own a copy or three of this beloved indie game, now's your chance to see what all the fuss is about. Just don't expect to do anything else for...
A group of individuals who formerly worked at the now-shuttered Cliffhanger Games on its canceled Black Panther game have been picked up by Wizards of the Coast for a new project. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the group is led by Monolith Productions veteran Michael de Plater, who previously was director of design on Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and VP, creative for Middle-earth: Shadow of War. "We were actually able to bring him and 14 key people that he's worked with there – and many of them at Monolith – to incubate a new game for us," said Wizards of the Coast president John Hight to GamesIndustry.biz. He added that the project is still in the very early stages, and is expected to go through a "lengthy concept process."...
Dragon’s Dogma 2 director Hideaki Itsuno says he is "very proud" of the highly anticipated sequel even though the game may not have suited "a certain type of audience." Speaking to VGC, Itsuno intimated he intentionally designed the sequel to be the antithesis of "a Nintendo" game, saying: "It's normal if some people outside that target audience" didn't quite appreciate the game. "I made the game not like a Nintendo one to be liked by all the people, but for a certain type of audience, so it’s normal if some people outside that target audience don’t like the game," he said. "However, people who enjoyed the game really loved it, appreciated the details and work. I’m very proud of it." As for what's next now Itsuno has left Capcom...
Regardless of what's been said about the game to date, Resident Evil: Requiem's director and producer want you to know that the title — scheduled for release in 2026, the series' 30th anniversary year — has more going on than a simple focus on nostalgia. It's perhaps an odd thing to hear, as Capcom itself has highlighted how Resident Evil Requiem will return to the survival horror series' roots back in Raccoon City, after several games set elsewhere. And it'll be there, in the crumbling remnants of the series' past, that Capcom has also promised players will find answers to lingering story threads and open questions from decades ago. But despite all of this, and despite the huge ongoing speculation over Leon S. Kennedy's potential...
Last week in Cologne, Capcom's nerve-jangling Resident Evil Requiem demo was one of the highlights of the Gamescom 2025 show floor. Offering an introduction to the game's hero Grace Ashcroft, as well as a suitably unsettling monster, the short taster of next year's title simultaeously felt fresh but also like classic Resident Evil — a perfect blend of old and new for the series' upcoming 30th anniversary. But, as we all know, there's something else about Resident Evil Requiem driving fan interest right now — and that's the ongoing question mark over the status of floppy-haired fan favorite Leon S. Kennedy. Rumors persist he is in the game as a second character, though, if indeed he is, Capcom once again held back from revealing the...
If you’ve ever been to gamescom, you’ll know the German city of Cologne isn’t adverse to lavish displays of excessive meat. Sizzling sausages the length of your arm curl around heaps of sauerkraut, and sweating hulks of pig known as pork knuckles sit alongside mountains of mashed potato. But it wasn’t until I sat down to play Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival that I truly saw the limits of just how meaty this year’s convention could get for me. I saw almost-dead humans being chopped up for cult-like rituals, people strung from ceilings with their backs opened up to form fleshy wings, and even at one point looked down to catch a look at my character’s fully-modelled, flopping appendage. Yes, despite all the gruesome violence on...
There are few pleasures in video games that can contend with a quick, clean, silent kill. And there’s no better place to find that than in a stealth game. The sneakiest of all the genres, stealth can be quite a surgical thing – an experience that rewards considered, methodical planning. But with that comes the risk of mistakes, and a slip-up in a stealth game can result in another, equally thrilling ride: one where quick thinking and unconventional solutions can help you slip back into the shadows. What we’re saying here is that stealth games are incredibly malleable and creative, often designed to give you unparalleled freedom within the space of their intricately-designed levels. But what are the very best stealth games? The coolest...
Microsoft has said it is "aware" of crashing issues with the newly released Gears of War: Reloaded on Steam and confirmed it is "investigating." Though a remaster of the original 2006 game, the shiny new version comes with improved visuals and audio, crossplay, and cross-progression, and all the DLC from the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. Despite describing the port as "faithfully remastered and optimized for PC," however, the game is currently sitting on a 'Mixed' user review rating on Steam, with players "disappointed" with crashing, "low population in multiplayer," and missing pre-order bonuses. At the time of this article's publication, 50% of the 633 Steam user reviews were positive. Gears of War: Reloaded launched on Valve's...
No Man’s Sky is expanding once again, this time with the free Voyagers update. Interestingly, developer Hello Games said the tech introduced with this update will be shared with its next game, Light No Fire. Voyagers adds a long list of features, which chief developer Sean Murray said Hello Games had worked on for some time now. Chief among them is the Corvette Ship Class and the possibility for a multiplayer crew. But there’s much more to Voyagers, revealed in the list below: Corvette Ship Class Assemble Ships Multiplayer Crew Mission Radar Autopilot in Space Space walking New missions StarShip Interiors New Spacesuit Sky diving Graphical Improvements Varied Cockpits New Expedition Voyagers arrives just over nine years after No...
The Nintendo Switch 2's second month on the market was another explosive one, at least in the U.S., where it surpassed 2 million units sold life-to-date, putting it 75% ahead of the unit sales pace set by the Nintendo Switch 1. This is according to monthly data from Circana, whose analysis was shared with IGN by Mat Piscatella. Nintendo Switch 2 sales in July were so strong that July hardware spending reached $384 million, the highest July hardware spend since July 2008. The Switch 2 was the best-selling console for the month of July, and unshockingly is the best-selling console in the U.S. year-to date in terms of both unit and dollar sales, surpassing the PlayStation 5. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is now the best-selling...
It often takes a sequel to unlock an idea’s full potential. Just look at Assassin’s Creed 2, Mass Effect 2, or Batman: Arkham City – games which erased the imperfections of their predecessors and elevated rough diamonds to all-time-classic status. Based on a new demo I played at gamescom 2025, I’m betting The Outer Worlds 2 is about to join that club. Obsidian’s first trip across its satirical galaxy back in 2019 had plenty going for it, but often felt constricted in scope or fell flat in its delivery. Those are flaws that a second attempt (plus a nice chunk of change from Microsoft’s wallet) could rectify, and it seems that’s exactly what has happened, if The Outer Worlds 2’s hour-long prologue is anything to go by. Its gleaming...
Chris Roberts, the chief developer of Star Citizen, has made a bold claim about next year’s single-player spinoff, Squadron 42, comparing it to the launch of behemoth Grand Theft Auto 6. Cloud Imperium Games’ space sim is considered one of the most controversial projects in all video games. Over the near 13 years since its crowdfunding drive began, Star Citizen has been called many things including a scam by those who wonder whether it will ever properly launch. Its virtual space ships, some of which cost hundreds of dollars, are often the focus of criticism. Indeed, Star Citizen has now raised an eye-watering $859 million, according to figures from CIG. The developer makes revenue publicly available on its website. CIG calls this...
Atari has acquired five chiefly dormant franchises from developer/publisher Ubisoft: Child of Eden, Cold Fear, Grow Home, Grow Up, and I Am Alive. Atari said it will "reintroduce iconic creations, bringing them to new platforms and renewed publishing frameworks." They'll all be re-released under Atari's own publishing label and be available "on new platforms." "Millions of players have experienced these worlds over the years, and this will open the door for long-time players to revisit those memories while inviting new audiences to discover them for the first time," said Deborah Papiernik, Ubisoft's VP of new business. "Atari has a rich gaming legacy and deep appreciation for these classic titles, we’re excited to see how they’ll...
Good news, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 fans! Clair Obscur is not just the shortened name for developer Sandfall Interactive's blockbuster RPG — it's also the name for an entire franchise. "Clair Obscur is the franchise name. Expedition 33 is one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise," director Guillaume Broche told MrMattyPlays (thanks TheGamer). "Exactly what it will look like and what the concept will be is still too soon to announce, but what is sure is that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise." And if that wasn't quite obvious enough for you, he also specifically talked about his process for when he "writes sequels," too, leaving us with little doubt that a follow-up game is on the way. Watch this...
