Today at Gamescom Opening Night Live, CI Games announced its Hexworks studio is rebooting its 2014 Souls-like Lords of the Fallen, with the new version getting just the smallest of title changes to The Lords of the Fallen. Like its predecessor, The Lords of the Fallen is a dark fantasy action RPG. However, it appears to be taking advantage of the eight years difference between the two to expand massively on the ideas of the original. The Lords of the Fallen takes place over a thousand years after the first game in a world that is supposedly "more than five times larger" than that of Lords of the Fallen and is split between the realms of the living and the dead. The world will contain NPC quests, a customizable protagonist, and a single-player campaign with the option for online co-op with a second player. The Lords of the Fallen is planned for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S, and is being made in Unreal Engine 5. A full gameplay reveal is expected later this year. The original Lords of the Fallen was co-developed by CI Games and Deck13, and published by either Bandai Namco, CI Games, or Square Enix in different regions. It was released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC back in 2014, and it also got a 2017 mobile version for iOs and Android. The original action RPG about fighting against the army of an evil god was, per our 2014 review, an entertaining hack-and-slash "but its risk-based reward system seems slightly out of place in a world where its hero so easily achieves great power and defense and makes risk obsolete."
