At Gamescom Opening Night Live, Striking Distance Studios founder Glen Schofield was there to deliver a new update to the upcoming sci-fi horror game, The Callisto Protocol. During Opening Night Live, Schofield revealed a new gameplay trailer that showed off Callisto Protocol's combat. We got a good look at its extreme goriness, including the protagonist pushing an enemy into a weird meat grinder-like appartus, brutally stabbing a foe in the head, and getting sliced up by a giant fan at the end of a long sewer-like water slide. We also learned about the "mutations" mechanic. Some enemies may have tentacles coming out of them - if you don't defeat the tentacle enemies quickly, they will mutate into much stronger versions with new abilities that can make short work of you. The Callisto Protocol is a sci-fi survival horror game from the creator of Dead Space planned for release on December 2, 2022. While the space setting will draw Dead Space comparisons, Schofield is promising to make the "scariest game" ever with his new studio. Schofield also promises more "replayablility" with The Callisto Protocol, and an emphasis on melee combat. The differences will outweigh the space setting similarities to the point that Schofield downplays calling The Callisto Protocol, 'Dead Space 4'. For more details on The Callisto Protocol check out IGN's full interview with Schofield, and for everything else check out IGN's rundown of all the new announcements from Opening Night Live.
