Netflix appears to be developing a AAA PC shooter at its new Los Angeles studio led by former Overwatch producer and Blizzard vice-president Chacko Sonny. As reported by mobilegamer.biz, the aptly named Netflix Games Studio is looking for a game director with experience in shooters to work on "a brand-new AAA PC game". Akin to Overwatch, it will seemingly be a live-service game as Netflix asks for "extensive experience" in this department. In a similar vein, the candidate must have a "deep understanding of highly engaging content and how to deliver it" and be "deeply passionate about social systems and gameplay, both cooperative and competitive". The job listing also demands the future director to develop a world, characters, and narrative "that are worthy of a Netflix film or TV series", and build the game within Unreal Engine. The job listing doesn't give too much else away, other than that Netflix is seeking someone with at least ten years of game design experience including time spent as a director. As this appears to be the initial hiring wave of a brand new studio, however, it will likely be years before we find out more on what Netflix's AAA game is. The entertainment streaming giant has been slowly but surely stepping into the video game industry by purchasing several mobile game developers over the last two years, but took a much bigger leap in October 2022 when it opened Netflix Games Studio. Speaking of Sonny's move over, Netflix’s VP of gaming, Mike Verdu, said: "He could have done anything, but he chose to come here. You don’t get people like that coming to your organization to build the next big thing in gaming unless there’s a sense that we’re really in it for the long haul and in it for the right reasons." Netflix hasn't been shy about its goals within gaming in the past either, saying in January 2022 that it aimed to be the "absolute best" gaming service in the industry. Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelancer and acting UK news editor. He'll talk about The Witcher all day. Continue reading...
