A third game in the Star Wars Jedi series is in the works, the actor behind its protagonist has confirmed. Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order launched in 2019 to critical and commercial acclaim, with more than 20 million players and over 10 million copies sold. It spawned a sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which launched in April 2023. The series stars young Jedi Knight, Cal Kestis, who fights against the Galactic Empire in a story set in the years after Star Wars: Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith. Speaking during the Star Wars: Jedi Game Series Panel at Ocala Comic Con 2023 on September 16, and captured in a video published to YouTube, Cal Kestis actor Cameron Monaghan discussed the unannounced project. “We’re working on the third,” Monaghan said. “We’re in the process of doing it right now. That’s a big undertaking and there have been some conversations so far. Hopefully when all things are said and done we’ll be able to go in and make something really cool for you guys again.” Before leaving developer Respawn, series' director Stig Asmussen told IGN he viewed Star Wars Jedi as a trilogy. “I always wanted to see this as a trilogy,” he told IGN earlier this year. “How can we take Cal and the crew to new places beyond what we were doing in the first game? We had a pretty decent idea of timeframe where we wanted Survivor to take place, what the stakes were going to be, what the tone of the game was going to be, what Cal was going to be up against, and how the crew was going to factor into that. And there’s ideas of what we could do beyond that as well.” Asmussen left Respawn earlier this month. “After careful thought and consideration, Stig Asmussen has decided to leave Respawn to pursue other adventures, and we wish him the best of luck,” EA said in a statement. “Veteran Respawn leaders will be stepping up to guide the team as they continue their work on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.” Asmussen has been a director at Respawn Entertainment since 2014. Before that he worked at Sony Interactive Entertainment primarily on the God of War series, including helming God of War 3. Asmussen has not disclosed his next destination. The Star Wars Jedi series has been a notable success story for EA, making it something of an exception to the company's overall experience with the franchise. When EA first revealed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order back in 2018, the company was coming off Battlefront 2, which had proven hugely controversial owing to its implementation of loot boxes. Asmussen's departure comes amid an uncertain period for EA, with Respawn among the studios split into a separate EA Entertainment group. BioWare has been among the studios most affected by the change, having experienced harsh layoffs amid Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's development. Asmussen left EA on a high note, however, with IGN's Jedi Survivor review praising his team's efforts. "It’s a sequel that does virtually everything better than the original – which was already an exceptional Star Wars game," we wrote. "If Respawn makes one more like this it’ll complete the best Star Wars trilogy in 30 years, hands down." [I]Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100.
