Baldur's Gate 3 DLC when? It's a question fans have been asking over and over, even as the base game itself is stuffed with enough content to suck up hundreds and hundreds of hours of our lives. But even as the game's success continues to grow, Larian Studios isn't quite ready to commit to anything yet, even subtly. Speaking to IGN at gamescom 2023, senior product manager at Larian Studios Tom Butler responded to a question about potential future expansion content by explaining that the team is currently focused on the upcoming PS5 launch of the game. Following that, Larian will be working on patching issues with the game on all platforms. So no expansion content in the immediate future. But what about after? "We'll carry on patching for a while and then we're all going to take a holiday and then we'll figure out what we do next," Butler explains. "But at the moment, we genuinely have discussions. We want to do more. We don't know what yet." We interviewed Butler earlier today in Cologne, shortly before Larian made the official announcement that Baldur's Gate 3 would make it to Xbox later this year after all. So it's probably safe to assume the Xbox release will also take up some of the studio's time before it can get to any new content. And after three years of early access and even longer in development, it's no shock that Larian developers might want a vacation before considering any significant expansions. Baldur's Gate 3 has previously been praised by players for its lack of microtransactions, and Larian has even issued a statement saying there would be no in-game purchases. It's unclear how this would jive with any future DLC or expansion plans, though. Larian's last game, Divinity: Original Sin 2, did not feature any additional paid content, but did have a major content patch post-launch that added new areas and quests, free of additional charge. Notably, Baldur's Gate 3 does have a Digital Deluxe edition with special items, and it's also had free bonus content via Twitch Drop. We recently chatted with Xbox head Phil Spencer, also at gamescom, where he discussed his own feelings on Baldur's Gate 3's success as well as the struggles with console parity between Xbox Series X and S. Act 3 is still a little buggy for a lot of players, but it sounds like Larian's working on that issue as well. Additional reporting by Destin Legarie Rebekah Valentine is a Senior Reporter at IGN. Continue reading...
