DC Universe Online Is Still Going, 13 Years Later — and Now It Has a PS5 Version

DC Universe Online is still going, 13 years after it launched on PC and PlayStation 3. Now it finally has a native PlayStation 5 version, and its developer has outlined plans for a number of future updates.

Dimensional Ink’s new lead producer, Kenn "Kendricke" White, announced that DCUO, the free-to-play MMO licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, is now available as a native client for PS5 alongside performance improvements. Until now, the PlayStation 4 version of DCUO was playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility. An Xbox Series X and S client is “on the way.”

Dimensional Ink said players of the native PS5 version will benefit from faster load times, smoother transitions, and higher frame-rates. Servers for the PS5 version are live now — PS5, PS4, and PC players can continue to play together on the same servers. Characters, account, and purchases carry over.

“The native version of DCUO on PS5 can better take advantage of the system's hardware for stronger performance, smoother frame-rates, faster load times, and natively runs at 4k,” Dimensional Ink added. “The game itself is identical to the PS4 version of the game.”

Meanwhile, Episode 47: Brainiac Returns! Launches in May, with Episode 48 set for September. Episode 49 launches during the first quarter of 2025. Here’s the official blurb on Episode 47:

Brainiac has returned! Seeking to learn from his previous defeats, he's launching an all-out assault on the Earth's ultimate symbols of hope and resistance, the Hall of Justice and the Hall of Doom. With the world hanging in the balance, the Justice League and Lex Luthor's Secret Society are forced to unite their powers and resources to thwart Brainiac's ingeniously malevolent plan.

In a letter to players, Kendricke said DCUO’s team is growing, with a new creative director and art director. “We're making significant investments in the game’s future, the people who are working on this beloved project, and in DCUO’s overall growth,” Kendricke insisted. “To put it simply, this is a great time to be a DCUO player.”

DC Universe Online (DCUO) launched in January 2011 for PC and PS3 before launching on PlayStation 4 in November 2013, then on Xbox One in April 2016, and Nintendo Switch in August 2019. Original developer Daybreak Austin Studio became Dimensional Ink Games back in January 2020, and continues to work on content with Daybreak Games Company publisher.
