Iconic Superhero Duos

From the MCU to the promise of the revamped DCU under James Gunn and Peter Safran, now is a great time to be a fan of superheroes! While everyone always talks about the spectacles of powers and fight scenes, it’s the relationships between the characters and the stories that unfold between them that keep many coming back for more. In honor of this, we’ve chosen to look at some famous duos in superhero history to wrap up our series highlighting pairs in gaming and entertainment.

The duo that first came to our mind, as we’re sure it did for many of you, is Batman and Robin. These two have been protecting the streets of Gotham and beyond since 1940 and have had each other’s backs in so many different ways. No matter if it was Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, or Damian Wayne, they’ve all been an invaluable resource and friend to Batman and we can only hope to see a brand-new relationship grow in the new DCU.

We are now taking a detour to Marvel to celebrate the friendship that is Rocket and Groot. These two Guardians of the Galaxy are as proficient in combat together as they are hilarious inside and out of it. Sure, they argue here and there, but who doesn’t have quarrels with those they love from time to time? Above all else, they would go to the ends of the farthest reaches of space for each other, and that’s all we look for in a partner, right?

Next on our list are two characters who fall more in the realm of villains/antiheroes, but their relationship has, in the past, brought out the best of these two characters. Yes, we’re talking about Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. Ever since Harley’s debut in Batman: The Animated Series, these two have helped each other in all kinds of ways. From Poison Ivy helping Harley move on from the problematic Joker to then forming their own romantic relationship that was recently featured in Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Speciall, these two are as powerful a duo as any.

Captain America’s Steve Rogers and The Winter Soldier’s Bucky Barnes are our next pick as they show the lengths we should go for those we love. Captain America may be the epitome of heroism and the fight for justice but he immediately risked it all to help his friend Bucky when he was being used as a weapon against his will. Their relationship has been explored in many films and comics, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier is no exception in showing that we can all get by with a little help from our friends.

We may be cheating here, but we just have to bring this list full circle and pick Batman again as the times he works together with Superman is always worth a mention. With one being a super-powered being from another planet and another being a rich and brilliant hero from Earth who uses his brain and skill over superpowers, their polar opposite origins complement each other differently from others on the list. While they have sometimes fought each other, their time together shows the power of friendship and the things we can accomplish when we work as a team.

These are only a few of the many superhero duos in comics, film, TV, and more, and we’d love to hear your favorites in the comments below!
