Homeworld 3 Is Coming in Q4 2022

Homeworld 3 will be released during Q4 2022, marking an end to what will be an almost two-decade wait for a new entry in the sci-fi real-time strategy series.

Announced during The Game Awards 2021, Homeworld 3 got a trailer mixing cinematics with in-engine footage, and announcing the game's release for Steam and Epic Games Store. We got a look at how the game will include battles in open space as well as across giant space deralicts called megaliths.

The game has been "developed for powerful modern hardware", and will include new ships, fully simulated ballistics, persistent fleets (with battle damage lingering from mission to mission), and multiple modes, including a campaign, multiplayer, and a "co-op mode with a roguelike twist."

Homeworld 2 arrived in 2003, and the sequel's story takes place generations after that game's events. Homeworld 1 and 2's art director, Rob Cunningham is now CEO of developer Blackbird Interactive, and explained in a press release that this game meets the goals he was aiming to meet almost 20 years ago:

“Homeworld 3 is the realization of the vision of what we set out to create in the Homeworld series, with modern technology allowing us to push beyond our wildest dreams of large-scale dynamic space combat packed with emotional sci-fi storytelling. We could not be more excited to debut the deepest look yet at gameplay with the incredible Homeworld community and the world at The Game Awards. We have got a lot more exciting details to share next year as we prepare for the launch of this massive next chapter.”
