Assassin's Creed's Next Game Will Be Announced In September, Valhalla Getting New Roguelite Mode

Ubisoft isn't quite ready to formally announce a new Assassin's Creed game — at least not yet — but it does have plenty of other content in store for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, including a brand-new rogulite mode due this summer.

Titled Forgotten Saga, the mode is described as a "fresh take" on the series' formula and will be free to all players. It brings to mind Hades, the smash hit roguelite from Supergiant Games; only instead of the Greek underworld, it will feature Niflheim, which fulfills a similar role in Norse mythology.

As many fans have observed, myth has taken on a greater role in the Assassin's Creed series of late. Conceived as a fairly realistic take on history, the series has lately been crawling with mythological creatures like Surtr. Forgotten Saga's journey to Niflheim appears to be more of the same.

On top of Forgotten Saga, Ubisoft also announced that Assassin's Creed fans can expect one final installment in Eivor's tale. Like Forgotten Saga, this content will be a free chapter for all players and will arrive at the end of 2022.

The announcements were part of Assassin's Creed 15th Anniversary Celebration Steam, which celebrated the release of the original Assassin's Creed in 2007. The Mastery Challenge Pack 2 and the Armory will be returning as part of the event, as will festivals. Ubisoft also announced that there will be new caves to explore as part of the quest to solve the mystery of the Tombs of the Fallen.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla was first released back in 2020, with its most recent expansion being Dawn of Ragnarok. Reception has been muted for the Norse-centric entry in the long-running series, leading to speculation that Ubisoft might be ready to move on to the previously-confirmed Assassin's Creed Infinity, but the development team seems to have a few more surprises in store for this year.

Asside from Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Ubisoft announced that Assassin's Creed Origin's new 4K 60fps patch is now available, and that it will be free to play from June 16 to June 20. Valhalla's Discovery Tour, Viking Age, is also receiving a stand-alone release on consoles, Stadia, and (at a later date) Luna.

Expect lots more content in the run-up to the announcement of the next Assassin's Creed, and keep an eye on IGN for even more as the Summer of Gaming continues.
