Over the course of Company of Heroes 3's expansive, open-ended Italian campaign, you'll fight your fair share of classic RTS battles. Quite a lot of them, probably. But to add some variety, there are also several less conventional encounters you can come across with their own rules and objectives, so you have to stay on your toes. From a desperate rescue mission to shadowy commando operations, it will take ingenuity and adaptability to break the Axis lines in the push toward Rome. We got to try out just a few of these unorthodox scenarios. They say the best way to stop a snake is to cut off the head. I don't know who "they" are, nor have I actually tested this. I'd rather leave snakes alone, you know? But it can definitely be true...
Startup developer Different Monster has announced Macabre Museum, a new four-player time-traveling co-op horror adventure game for PC. No release date has been given as of yet. “We’ve been really inspired by nostalgic movies and TV shows, and that feeling you get when walking around a museum and just imagining what would happen if the mummy in the display case suddenly woke up!” Different Monster’s Creative Director said. Expect puzzle-solving plus plenty of combat with terrifying monsters as you travel from Ancient Egypt to Historic Mesoamerica and other museum-relevant time periods. Take a look at the game's first trailer above and its first screenshots in the gallery below. IGN will have more on Macabre Museum as its development...
It's a damn fine day for deals, so let's skip the preamble. I've not seen these AAAs go this low before, so buy or be sad (when they sell out). Likewise, that 2K pack is, well, packed with some seriously attainable items for not much money. Lastly, the brothers Warner have taken an axe to a bunch of great Batman and Middle-earth games. Always worth a look. Notable Sales for Nintendo Switch Purchase Cheaply for PC Exciting Offers for XO/XS Product Savings for PS4/PS5 Legit Discounts for LEGO Adam Mathew is our Aussie deals wrangler. Last week, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said new Call of Duty games will remain on PlayStation platforms for "at least several more years" after Activision's current contract with Sony expires. Now, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan is calling Spencer's offer "inadequate". In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, Ryan said he didn't intend to comment on the business discussion until Spencer brought it into the "public forum." "Microsoft has only offered for Call of Duty to remain on PlayStation for three years after the current agreement between Activision and Sony ends," Ryan said, "After almost 20 years of Call of Duty on PlayStation, their proposal was inadequate on many levels and failed to take account of the impact on our gamers. We want to...
CD Projekt Red has decided to end development of new content for the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Cyberpunk 2077, confirming in an update note that future expansions, including the recently announced Phantom Liberty, will only be released on PC, PS5, Stadia and Xbox Series X|S. Following Patch 1.6 (the Edgerunners Update), they’ll focus their attention and resources on the new-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077; however, they’re still committed to and will continue to provide technical support for last gen versions of the game, according to the release. “In practice, that means after Patch 1.6 your game will continue to work on previous-gen consoles and we will continue to provide technical support to players — as we do with all our...
Fans may have waited two decades for a Final Fantasy 7 remake – but a new PC mod has reverted 2020's uprezzed heroes back to the original PlayStation game's low-poly graphics. As reported by PC Gamer, Nexus Mods user FantasyRaider has created a mod that turns Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret and Yuffie back to their original, pointy Final Fantasy 7 appearances. The characters will appear in their low-poly forms - which are technically taken from the Windows 1998 version of the game (evidenced by their mouths that don't appear in the original) throughout both gameplay and in-engine cutscenes. They won't appear in Remake's full cinematic cutscenes, however, but can still be enjoyed for most of the game. Everything else remains in full HD...
As part of D23 Expo 2022, Disney & Marvel will be hosting their first ever Games Showcase this week and fans can expect video game announcements from the worlds of Star Wars, Pixar, Marvel, and so much more. Alongside a look at Marvel's Midnight Suns and Amy Hennig's Marvel ensemble game from Skydance New Media, there should be plenty of other surprises in store. IGN is carrying the stream and will be hosting an exclusive post-show with Skydance's Amy Hening and Marc Bernardin, Firaxis Games' Jake Solomon and Garth DeAngelis, and more. This watch guide will provide you with everything you need to know to watch the show, including when it starts, a list of places you can watch it with us, and what you can expect to see at the show...
Beyond The Wire fashions itself as an epic simulation of the first World War. When you sign up you’re shuffled into a player-organized battalion, which then orchestrates the full military operations of war-torn Europe across massive, 100-player servers. Your conscript can serve the cause in whatever way they want: maybe they’re an artilleryman who shells the rival factions from afar. Or perhaps they log time as a gunner huddled behind machine gun emplacements, or a scout marking potential headshots for their sniper compatriots. It all sounds incredibly enticing, and when it comes together, Beyond The Wire delivers a steely, thinking-man's interpretation of the chaos found in DICE's 2016 standout Battlefield 1. The problem is, even in...
It looks as though Cyberpunk 2077 may only be getting one expansion. Announced yesterday during Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City Wire livestream, Phantom Liberty is heading to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Google Stadia sometime in 2023. However, while many expected Cyberpunk to echo The Witcher 3's two major expansions, it looks as though only one is in the works. “Glad to hear we sparked your interest!” said developer CD Projekt Red in a YouTube comment (spotted by XGP) on the expansion’s reveal trailer. “As for the future, Phantom Liberty is the only planned expansion for Cyberpunk 2077.” Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty marks the first major content expansion beyond its smaller, regular updates. At the moment, little is...
The developers behind Moonbreaker are hosting two preview weekends on Steam in September, leading up to the game's Early Access launch later this month. Moonbreaker will hit Steam Early Access on September 29, but those wanting to try out the game even earlier may be able to participate in one of two playtests via Steam. The first will occur between September 9 and September 11, and the second will run from September 16 to September 18. The entire game will be unlocked for testers, though some in-game systems and the store will be disabled. Moonbreaker is a digital tabletop strategy game in which you build armies from a huge selection of units before taking them into battle. But the kicker is you can also paint your units, choosing...
Remember when everyone wondered whether Nier Automata had a hidden church? After sightings of a mysterious door followed by days of intrigue, it was revealed to be a hoax – instead, it was an ambitious project by a trio of Nier modders. Now, the mod – once thought to be impossible to make – has finally been released to the public. “IT’S OUT,” said modder DevolasRevenge via Twitter. The Nier: Automata mod was originally unveiled on Reddit, as one user claimed to have discovered a whole new area that was never before seen. “I think my game has a glitch since I keep going back to the beginning I don't know how to fix it and the cup has random letters or Korean,” they said. “Maybe I need to restart the game or retry the boss again or...
You know that one soulslike game that is a decent enough take on the genre, but also has a bit of wonkiness that otherwise holds it back? Sorry, did you think I was talking about Lords of the Fallen, or maybe Mortal Shell? Or perhaps you thought I meant The Surge, Ashen, Vampyr, or Remnant: From The Ashes – or even Thymesia from earlier this month? No, in this case I was referring to Steelrising, a French Revolution-themed action-RPG that’s chock full of creepy robots, emotionally unstable aristocrats in powdered wigs, and death screens that tell you you’re dead. The unfathomably weird setting is a delight, but simplistic combat and underwhelming boss fights end up making disappointing use of it. That means in the long list of recent...
Blessed Hump Day is upon us, fellow bargain hunters. I've sighted a decent (post price hike) deal on the Meta Quest 2—the best VR headset going. I'm also tracking two great discounts on arcade sticks (one of which works on an absurd amount of systems). Lastly, I reckon 17 bucks for that Humble Bundle is enticing. Personally, I'd spend the same amount on that pack with every Red Faction game. Then, I'd get my ass to Mars. Halo and 343 Industries was an arranged marriage from the start. After the latest sting of bad news – the cancellation of split-screen co-op – we spend an hour discussing 343's past, present, and future with the franchise. Is the arranged marriage working? Should Halo even be a "live service" game? It's a complex topic with no clear answers, but clearly it's time to have the conversation. Plus: September's Xbox Game Pass games, the Game Pass Friends & Family Plan goes live in a test market, and more! They don’t get as much attention as Grand Theft Auto or God of War, but the survival genre is one of the most popular in video games. From Minecraft to Valheim, survival games consistently attract large and passionate fanbases dedicated to building their own unique worlds. They’re driven by rough challenges, an endless amount of content, and the pure satisfaction of building from an axe and a campfire to town, settlements, and even entire cities. Every entry is unique, but they all share the common element of inviting you to craft your own survival in a hostile world, whether it be filled with monsters, dinosaurs, or giant ants. We picked up our tools and crafted our own list of the best survival games, picking the ones that have the...
The IGN crew played a lot of games at Gamescom 2022. A lot of those were through dedicated appointments to write big previews of some of the most anticipated games out there. But my personal favorite bit of every conference is wandering down to the indie floors and seeing what gems are coming up that may not be getting the same mainstream attention, usually because their teams and budgets are much smaller. In no specific order, here’s a collection of all the absolute best things I played at Gamescom 2022. Most of them aren’t out yet, though a few are, and some even have demos on Steam you can check out now. Chances are you’ll find something neat in here, especially if you’re currently looking at the massive slate of AAA delays right...
A good sports management game shouldn’t just accurately represent the sport on the cover; it also needs to show some personality. It needs to be a storyteller. In any sports organisation – as time, championships, seasons, and people come and go – their story grows and changes, building a folklore and a history that makes them unique and loved by their fans. It’s what gives them an identity. F1 Manager 2022, despite being a first attempt at the genre by Frontier Developments, is definitely a storyteller; one that will help you shape the future and history of any current Formula 1 team into one of your own making. Despite its quirks and the fact that it’s missing some features that experienced sim fans might expect, F1 Manager 2022 is...
CD Projekt Red has revealed the English voice cast of its upcoming Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime, which includes Breaking Bad actor Giancarlo Esposito. Revealed in a tweet (below), Esposito — who played Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and Antón Castillo in Far Cry 6 — will be joined by fellow cast members Zack Aguilar (One Punch Man, Demon Slayer) playing protagonist David Martinez, Emi Lo (My Hero Academia) playing Lucy, and William-Christopher Stephens (Yasuke, An Invited Guest) playing Maine. Also joining them is Marie Westbrook (Jujutsu Kaisen, Titanic 2), Stephanie Wong (Green Snake, American Pie's Girls' Rules), Ian James Corlett (the Sky Cooper film), Alejandra Cazares (Fallout), Gloria Garayua (Fun with Dick and Jane), and Borge...
The then founder of 2K Games, Christoph Hartmann revealed he actually let his pet pug, Sissi, decide the cover for the critically accalimed Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. The news comes through a GameSpot interview with the founder, now head of Amazon’s video game division, where he said the team, under heavy pressure, placed 40 different mock-ups on the floor of their office and let Sissi walk around and pick one herself. “We're like, ‘What?’ We've been working so hard, our blood pressure is so high. We're like, ‘Okay, funny joke, haha, now let's get down to business.’ He's like, ‘No, we're doing this,;” Matt Gorman, one of 2K's earliest employees, recalled. “And so we all just looked at each other, and we're like, ‘Holy cow! We've...
Company of Heroes 3 sticks close to the World War 2 RTS's roots in many regards. But maybe the biggest departure is its open-ended Italian campaign. While Company of Heroes 2's Ardennes Assault expansion played with the idea of nonlinear storytelling, this new campaign is taking things to another level in terms of branching story and player freedom. One way this campaign shows the war from a new side is the inclusion of Italian partisan forces who worked against Mussolini's government and the occupying Axis forces, assisting the Allies in liberating the country. They are represented by the fictional rebel leader Valenti, who will come to you with requests and suggestions. "So if you work toward loyalty with Valenti … you can gain...
CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077's first major expansion is called Phantom Liberty and will only be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. Announced during its Night City Wire livestream today, September 6, the expansion marks the first major addition of new content to Cyberpunk 2077 outside of its various patches that fixed the game following its disastrous launch on consoles. Developing... Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelancer. He'll talk about The Witcher all day. Continue reading...
CD Projekt Red has announced Roach Race, a Witcher-themed mobile spin-off that arrives today. Announced during a Cyberpunk 2077 stream, the pixel art game will be totally free, with no microtransactions. It will be playable on iOS, Android... and inside Cyberpunk 2077 itself. It will be the first of a set of arcade games released inside Cyberpunk. We only saw a hint of the game in action during the stream, but it appears to be an endless runner in which you play as Geralt of Rivia's horse, Roach. It doesn't look all that different to Google's Dinosaur Game. Joe Skrebels is IGN's Executive Editor of News. Follow him on Twitter. Have a tip for us? Want to discuss a possible story? CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 is getting DLC based on the Cyberpunk Edgerunners Netflix series later today. The developer kicked off its Cyberpunk Edgerunners edition of its Night City Wire livestream by announcing the DLC and its release today, September 6. The DLC will seemingly be a story-focused expansion that lets players take on the role of David Martinez, the protagonist of Edgerunners, in a tale taking place alongside the events of the main Cyberpunk 2077 game. Developing... Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelancer. He'll talk about The Witcher all day. Continue reading...
Wild Arena Survivors, Ubisoft's new mobile Battle Royale game that launched quietly last week, was reportedly once a Far Cry game. A source familiar with Wild Arena Survivors told mobilegamer.biz that it was once called Far Cry: Wild Call and was intended to be a Battle Royale spin-off for the franchise, with a similar art direction as Far Cry 6. The name remains in some parts of the game - players take part in the Wild Call Festival - and the game is reminiscent of Far Cry 6 in other ways, including its colour palette, art style, roaming animals, and more. The Far Cry name was reportedly cut from the game as a means for Ubisoft to cut back on marketing and other costs, after the game failed to make much of an impact during its...
In a time where the soulslike genre’s influence can be felt in just about every action-RPG, it’s easy for the plethora of challenging adventures to blend together in a montage of death screens. Asterigos: Curse of the Stars is a cartoonish odyssey inspired by Greek and Roman mythology with a stripped-down version of the soulslike formula at its center, and while at first I thought its formula might feel a bit too familiar, it ended up surprising me with consequential decisions in each act that made me lean forward in my chair. I’m used to being punished for my foolhardy behavior with numerous character deaths, but it was another thing entirely when my questionable decisions had an adverse impact on the story, and that raised the stakes...
Tiktok's parent company ByteDance has reportedly laid off hundreds of staff members, and is "aggressively downsizing" its video game business. As reported by the South China Morning Post (and spotted by GamesIndustry), ByteDance has shut down most of its Shanghai-based Wushuang Studio and either laid off staff or moved them to other divisions of the company. Jobs have also been cut at the Jiangnan game development studio in Hangzhou. Sources familiar with the downsizing said ByteDance's current gaming projects - which include a handful of mobile games - will continue to be supported in its Shanghai office, but seemingly no new developments will begin. Perhaps the most notable game coming from ByteDance is Marvel Snap, a new...
Rocksmith has been around since 2011, beginning as an alternative to the five button rhythm guitar craze, set apart by the fact that it lets players use their own real six strings as the controller, turning the act of actually playing a guitar into a rhythm game. Over the years, it’s more been touted for its success as a guitar learning tool than an actual competitor to other rhythm games, and that’s really what Rocksmith+ leans into. Rocksmith+ is a subscription service that costs either $14.99 per month, $39.99 for three months, and $99.99 for a full year, and along with that cost comes a library of more than 5,000 songs, a comprehensive suite of lectures to teach you how to play guitar at just about every level, and a staggering...

News on State of Decay 3 has been about as rare as a pleasant day in a zombie apocalypse, but Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty has just revealed that the upcoming game is being made in Unreal Engine 5 with the assistance of Gears of War developer The Coalition. As reported by Wccftech, Booty appeared on Xbox's Major Nelson podcast and shared some interesting behind-the-scenes details on the development of State of Decay 3. "You mentioned [State of Decay 3 developer] Undead Labs, they're working with The Coalition up in Vancouver, our Gears of War studio, using some of the technology around Unreal Engine 5 and some of the stuff that's been in Gears of War before to bring that into State of Decay 3," Booty said to Nelson. "Last week...
Following the news that Halo Infinite will no longer be getting split-screen local co-op, some players have already discovered a way to take advantage of a menu glitch to make it happen. As reported by Eurogamer, @Zeny_IC on Twitter discovered that players on Xbox Series X/S can use a menu glitch to add three local co-op players to their game. You can check out how it works in the tutorial by @HaloCreation below and read the steps after the video.
