Despite being the face of a Hollywood film franchise and the star of a three decade old video game franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog is still homeless. As reported by Automaton, fans grew concerned recently after discovering what appeared to be a major change to an incredibly random piece of Sonic the Hedgehog lore. A comic featured in the 2025 Sonic the Hedgehog Annual claimed the blue blur lived in Green Hill Zone, the iconic opening level to the original Sonic the Hedgehog. But Sonic lore has otherwise stated he's a drifter, roaming from place to place and never settling down, with even official channels like the TailsTube web series pointing to this fact. Some fans were therefore relieved to hear Sonic had settled down, while...
Infinity Nikki, the open-world dress up role-playing game from former The Legend of Zelda director Kentaro Tominaga, launches on PlayStation 5, PC, and mobile on December 5. Developer Infold Games revealed the date alongside a new trailer, below, which showed off a ton of the world alongside its characters, their companions, side activities, and clothes players can dress up in. "Infinity Nikki breathes new life into the Nikki series by delivering an open world experience unlike any other," the synopsis reads. "Players will discover and explore a charming, vibrant world through activities such as fishing, pet grooming, and fashion contests. Additionally, a diverse cast of characters will brighten the world through evocative and...
Controversial games and entertainment company Embracer has provided a financial update and in it delivered a verdict on its recently released games. Embracer, which bought the Tolkien IP in 2022 for $395 million, said The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria’s Steam and Xbox launch in August “performed slightly above management expectations,” which sounds like corporate speak for did well. Free Range Games’ survival and crafting game first launched on PC as an Epic Games Store exclusive in October last year, before coming out on PS5 in December. While we’re on The Lord of the Rings, Embracer said Middle-earth Enterprises had a “slow quarter” year-on-year (the July to September Q2), with no notable new partner releases, but a higher...
Nintendo masterpiece The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time sees protagonist Link play beautiful melodies on an ocarina to cast magical effects and save the world. Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii does the same, sort of, except protagonist Majima instead summons a giant glowing jellyfish that fights pirates. Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii developer Ryu Ga Gotoko Studio shared the combat abilities Majima can use in the game in a blog post translated by Gematsu. This included details on the Dark Instruments he can deploy and the sharks, apes, and jellyfish they summon to fight baddies. Alongside the more traditional Mad Dog style Majima has used throughout the entire Yakuza / Like a Dragon series, players can also choose to use his Sea...
Black Ops 6 Season 1 launches today, November 14, and with it comes a mammoth update that has become a Call of Duty trademark. The Season 1 update, which brings Call of Duty up to version 1.061.000, is available to download now and weighs in at a gargantuan 40.422 GB on PS5 and 38.724 GB on PS4. This is an enforced update for Call of Duty, the all-encompassing app that houses Black Ops 6, Warzone, and prior Call of Duty games. You need to download the 40 GB update for the base game even if you don’t have Black Ops 6. Season 1, which goes live at 9am Pacific / 5pm UK time, makes a number of significant changes to Black Ops 6, adding new Multiplayer maps, skins, a battle pass, and big balance changes. Activision published the Season 1...
Mortal Kombat 1 developer NetherRealm fully unveiled Ghostface overnight, showing off the DLC guest character’s signature hunting knife, crawling skills, and ability to phone in a fellow Ghostface partner to help finish off victims. But what the developers failed to reveal is which Mortal Kombat characters they’re quietly bringing back to the series via the Scream villain’s various versions that are available in-game. During a Kombat Kast, NetherRealm confirmed there are actually three versions of Ghostface: the main Ghostface is the villain from the Scream films, as you’d expect, but the identities of the other two are secrets NetherRealm challenged players to work out for themselves. As reported by EventHubs, NetherRealm...
In the wake of today's large 2.0 update for Warcraft III: Reforged, Blizzard has released the complete list of patch notes, revealing changes to everything from multiplayer to various bug fixes. The biggest highlight is a graphical update that adds HD versions of classic units, buildings, visual effects, environments, and icons. It also includes the option to customize between Reforged and Classic HD assets so fans can mix and match as they please. Elsewhere, Warcraft III: Reforged 2.0 includes improvements to the lighting, the addition of XP and leveling to ranked play, and music from Warcraft I and II. The user interface also features various updates. The 2.0 update represents another step forward for Blizzard's ill-fated...
Treyarch has published patch notes for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 1 ahead of its launch on PC and consoles tomorrow. Following a string of smaller updates delivered throughout the last few weeks, today’s patch notes tease an update that is (unsurprisingly) the biggest yet. It’s got everything from weapon balance adjustments to details on Warzone, and while most of the news focuses on changes to Multiplayer and Zombies, the team made sure to iron out some Campaign wrinkles, too. There’s a laundry list of fixes for players of every shape and size, including those worried about players who want to cheat their way to the top. One specific area Treyarch took aim at with its Black Ops 6 Season 1 update revolves around...
Blizzard just wrapped up its Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct, a nearly hour-long presentation featuring numerous updates from across the Warcraft franchise - almost like a miniature BlizzCon. We heard about World of Warcraft’s next major update, a tease for its next expansion, new updates for World of Warcraft Classic, some long-awaited remasters, and planned updates for both Hearthstone and Warcraft Rumble. If you missed the Direct, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything Blizzard showed at its Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct today: World of Warcraft: The War Within next major update unveiled First up, retail World of Warcraft, which is currently near the end of the first major story beat of the expansion The War...
Today’s Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct largely focused on updates to games that we’ll see in the next several months to early next year. However, the presentation ended with one big tease that’s farther out – a major feature coming to World of Warcraft’s next expansion that players have been asking about for years: player housing. The presentation didn’t offer any real details about exactly how player housing would work or what it would entail. All we learned is that the feature is in the works, and that we’ll finally see it in World of Warcraft: Midnight, the game’s next expansion planned for a full reveal in late summer of 2025. The idea of player housing has been toyed around with in expansions going as far back as the...
World of Warcraft is gearing up for its next major patch coming early next year, which will send players to a location that’s been talked about in the game for years, but never visited: the goblin capital of Undermine. With patch 11.1, “Undermine(d)”, players will visit the goblin city of Undermine buried deep in the earth, where they’ll ally themselves with one of the four major goblin cartels and navigate the complex politics of the city. They’ll receive a new customizable ground mount specifically built for use in Undermine (it’s a fancy car) that goes really, really fast. As usual for a new major patch, Undermine(d) will bring with it numerous new activities. There’s a new arena map, and a new dungeon, Operation Floodgate...
During today’s Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct, Blizzard announced its next big plans for World of Warcraft: Classic. Shocking no one, it’s planning to move onto the next expansion in 2025: Mists of Pandaria. As with other Classic expansions, Mists of Pandaria will launch with “some changes” to its original form, but will largely retain the same content and features from when it first released in 2012. Among other new features, Mists of Pandaria introduced the continent of Pandaria, the playable Pandaran race that could join either the Alliance or the Horde, the Monk class, pet battles, Scenarios, and flexible raiding. Notably, though, this will be a different experience than the one offered during the recent Mists of Pandaria...
It’s the 30th anniversary of Warcraft, and to celebrate, Blizzard is bringing back a couple of bonafide classics. Today, Blizzard announced it’s releasing remasters of both the original Warcraft and Warcraft 2, and they’re both out today. During today’s Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct stream, Blizzard unveiled both remasters, which will include fully updated graphics as well as an option to revert back to original visuals, a number of quality of life features, and improved UI and UX features. Warcraft II will also include multiplayer, with all legacy custom maps being compatible and playable. Critically, these are both being billed as remasters rather than full-blown “reimaginings” like Warcraft III: Reforged. Fans of the original...
Sony has confirmed its PlayStation Plus Game Catalog lineup for November 2024, and it includes the return of Rockstar’s GTA 5 in what's an impressive month for subscribers. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony also confirmed heavy hitters Dying Light 2: Stay Human and Like a Dragon: Ishin join the subscription service from November 19. On the same day, five new games join PlayStation Plus Premium: PS VR2 game Synapse and four Classics; Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Blood Omen 2, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Resistance 2. It’s worth noting Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered launch next month, so these classics are well-timed. It's also worth bearing in mind that the included Resistance games are streaming only for PlayStation Plus Premium...
Hundreds of unionized ZeniMax workers go on strike today over an alleged lack of bargaining by parent company Microsoft. Staff who are members of ZeniMax Workers United-CWA are on a one-day strike to call out Microsoft for an alleged lack of progress at the bargaining table over remote work and for allegedly unilaterally outsourcing quality assurance work without bargaining with the union. In January 2023, ZeniMax Workers United-CWA formed the first video game studio union at Microsoft, representing over 300 quality assurance workers in Maryland and Texas. Today's strike takes place at four ZeniMax locations across Maryland and Texas, with workers set to return to their desks tomorrow, November 14. Microsoft did not immediately...
With Microsoft’s multiplatform video game release strategy in full swing, some Xbox fans are wondering whether flagship exclusives such as Halo will ever make the jump to PlayStation. But according to Microsoft’s gaming chief Phil Spencer, there are no “red lines” in its first-party lineup. Microsoft has so-far used older games released over a year ago for its multiplatform push as opposed to brand new games, but that will soon change with the release of Indiana Jones. Microsoft will launch MachineGames' hotly anticipated Xbox game on PS5 just a few months after it launches on Xbox and PC this December. It’s the latest first-party Xbox game to make the jump to a rival console, following the release of Obsidian’s Pentiment and...
Stalker 2 developer GSC Game World has confirmed the game’s final PC system requirements ahead of its release date of November 20, 2024. “Examine the final system requirements carefully, and adjust your machinery for a trouble-free connection to the Noosphere,” GSC tweeted. GSC provides four graphics presets here: low; medium; high; and epic, as well as a target resolution and FPS for each. The high graphics preset is what GSC calls recommended, and provides 60fps gameplay at 1440p. For that high graphics preset, you’ll need a Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti / RTX 4070 or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT GPU and 32GB of RAM. Low and medium require 16GB of RAM and less powerful GPUs. All graphics presets, however, require 160GB of SSD storage...
Star Trek actor Tim Russ plays Sylens in Lego Horizon Adventures, IGN can confirm. Russ, who famously plays Tuvok in Star Trek: Voyager, assumes the role of Sylens after Horizon developer Guerrilla Games recast the character following the death of Lance Reddick in March 2023. Sylens is the deuteragonist of Horizon Zero Dawn and a returning character in its sequel. He allies with protagonist Aloy to discover the truth behind the machines and the fate of the Old Ones. IGN's Lego Horizons Adventures review returned a 7/10. We said: "Lego Horizon Adventures reimagines Horizon Zero Dawn with a playful Lego twist, simplifying the story while keeping the heart of its key moments and characters." Check out Russ as Sylens in Lego Horizon...
It took me a while to figure Lego Horizon Adventures out. It’s the action game equivalent of watching the movie version of a book you like: It hits the major points, takes some liberties with characters and events, and then wraps everything up with a shiny bow in an abridged length. And like so many Hollywood adaptations, it handles the source material well without ever hitting the same heights. After spending 21 hours reaching 100% completion, I enjoyed nearly everything about its beautiful world and rich customization options, but predictable level design, and a lack of things to do beyond the modest yet well-paced campaign made it feel like I was building a Lego set while missing a page or two from the instruction manual. Lego...
Welcome back, friends, to more of the cheapest games and controllers going. If I was you (and I never played them), I'd score those incredibly cheap Borderlands compilations on Switch, the highly reduced Logitech PC peripherals, and the equal parts challenging / satisfying Dragon's Dogma 2. See you tomorrow for more! In retro news, I'm fondly remembering the 12th birthday of Mirrors Edge, a 'First Person Parkourer' pioneer. I recall being mighty impressed when DICE took a break from its usual Battlefield shenanigans to (almost completely) ditch gunplay in pursuit of FPS platforming flow and good old-fashioned flykicking fascists in the face. Yeah, the story was short and not particularly riveting, but the speed-wall-running was...
Entertainment empire Disney needs a new CEO, and a new report suggests that a familiar face from the world of games could be in the running. Andrew Wilson, the always impeccably dressed CEO of EA, is reportedly being considered for Disney's top job. It's a big move in the entertainment world, with potential ramifications for fans of Pixar and Marvel as well as The Sims, Battlefield, and Dragon Age. Iger's current contract runs until 2026, so it could be a while before anyone actually needs to get new business cards printed. IGN has reached out to EA for a comment on the story. The report came from The Wall Street Journal, which added that Wilson is up against at least two other external candidates for the replacement of current CEO...
Treyarch has pulled back the curtain on Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Season 1 battle pass and a number of Operator bundles, revealing a wardrobe of skins that includes highlights like a shark, a racoon, and one outfit that looks…unpleasant. A full breakdown for the upcoming first season of content was revealed in a post on the Call of Duty website. It comes with everything you could ever want to know about Black Ops 6 Season 1, including an updated battle pass system that has its own weapons and skins to unlock as well as first details about what comes with a BlackCell upgrade. Operator Sev serves as the mascot for this introductory content rollout, but the real eye-catching skins won’t be found in that standard battle pass. Today’s...
[Editor's note: Thank you to the team at IGN China for conducting this interview. It has been translated into English.] When it comes to reflecting the characteristics of "Marvel Heroes" in-game and making Marvel Rivals stand out among other hero-based PvP games on the market, recreating their signature appearances and actions are of course important, but so is coming up with recognizable features in terms of both gameplay and character characteristics, as this is what will leave a deep impression on players. Environmental destruction and hero team-ups are two very prominent features of Marvel Rivals at the system level. Although their focus is different, at their core, they are both meant to represent the unique presence and...
Beyond manticores and kayrans and Dagon, one near-mythical monster in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt continues to haunt players above all else: a little floating sledgehammer that pops up between Geralt's legs. The Witcher 3 is celebrating its 10-year anniversary in just six months but a bizarre bug — a glitch, not an endrega — continues to be a problem for the rare player who is unlucky enough to be cursed with it. It sees a small blacksmith's hammer appear between Geralt's ankles and stay there perpetually. Reddit user Idratherhikeout brought it to fans' attention once again this week when they posted an image of Geralt with the infamous hammer. "I got infected by the sledgehammer bug," they said. "Is it still not fixable? "I am...
Tim Miller, the chief creator of Amazon’s upcoming Prime Video animated anthology Secret Level, has spoken out for the first time on the series’ Concord episode, which comes out next month after Sony shut down not only the game, but its developer. Concord, a live service hero shooter from Sony-owned Firewalk Studios, has gone down as one of the biggest flops in PlayStation history. Amid disastrously low player numbers, Sony hauled Concord offline just two weeks after launch. It eventually shuttered Firewalk and confirmed Concord wouldn’t return. It has proved a costly failure for Sony. Concord's initial development deal was around $200 million according to a report by Kotaku, which cited two sources familiar with the agreement. They...
Whether you adored 2013 indie darling Contrast or were disappointed by 2016’s We Happy Few, it’s hard to argue that developer Compulsion Games doesn’t swing for the fences and try new things. After spending a day with the team taking a closer look at South of Midnight, it’s clear that innovation streak hasn’t slowed down one bit, and I went from mild curiosity to full-blown hype for this unique action-adventure game. Though I didn’t see anything that blew my socks off in terms of gameplay, it stood out in just about every other way, especially with its striking setting, curious stop motion animation, and stellar original soundtrack. That all left me eager to see more and play it for myself. South of Midnight is set in a part of the...
Veteran fans of all-encompassing battle royale Fortnite have a treat in store: the original "OG" version of the game re-launches next month. In a tweet, developer Epic Games announced the OG Fortnite experience returns on December 6, but this time is “here to stay.” That means players can relive Fortnite battle royale from the start when it launched in September 2017 and explore the OG map, collect OG loot, and relive OG seasons. Epic had said that Fortnite OG and the original map would return at some point this year after relaunched in limited-time form back in November 2023. Enthusiasm for Fortnite OG was overwhelming and saw Fortnite enjoy its “biggest day” ever with over 44.7 million players jumping in to take a trip down memory...
Rockstar issued a surprise update for GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition today, November 12 — nearly two years since the last one. GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition, a 2021 compilation of 2001’s Grand Theft Auto 3, 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and 2004’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, was heavily criticized upon launch on PC and console. IGN’s GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition review returned a 5/10. We said: “GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition is defective, disappointing, and surprisingly disrespectful to three classic games and their many legions of fans.” In contrast, the mobile versions of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, released in December last year, met with critical acclaim. Players praised the ports for...
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has a new update (patch 4.5) out now across all platforms, adding the hotly anticipated Neo-Volkite pistol to the game. Saber Interactive’s explosive third-person melee / shooter set in Games Workshop’s grimdark sci-fi universe set records for a Warhammer video game upon its release in September, and has sold an impressive 4.5 million copies so far. Saber has continued to update it since, with today’s patch notes revealing yet more balance changes ahead of a larger update set to add Dark Angels cosmetics. Let’s start with the Neo-Volkite pistol, which is a powerful thermal ray weapon that shoots lethal beams that burns enemies to ash. It’s available now for the Assault, Vanguard, and Bulwark classes...
