As we rang in the new year earlier this week, thousands of people seemed to be celebrating in an admittedly unusual way: by playing Valve's 2018 TCG Artifact. Then, as quickly as they started, the 12,000-ish individuals all stopped playing at once on January 3, leaving the game as empty as it had been at the end of 2024. Who were these people? No one seems to know. The Artifact community isn't reporting any sudden spikes in interest, and no one's really talking about the game on social media apart from marveling at the sudden jump in player numbers. So why, then, is SteamDB suggesting that a free-to-play card game that is, by all accounts, close to dead, seeing wild spikes in users over very specific two-day periods? As spotted by...
Call of Duty’s 1.065.000 is now installable, setting the Squid Game crossover for Black Ops 6 and Warzone live. While the Squid Game crossover, alongside its controversial Event Pass, is the highlight of this update, it also makes a number of changes to the first-person shooter, as detailed in the patch notes on Activision's website. Conspicuous by its absence is mention of anti-cheat after a troubling period for Call of Duty that's seen its hardcore community call on Activision to do more to prevent cheaters from impacting both Black Ops 6 and Warzone. Expect anti-cheat improvements from Season 2. The 2.699GB patch (PS5) for the Call of Duty app, which must be downloaded whether you own Black Ops 6 or not, adds new Multiplayer and...
Outside of the comics, 2024 was a pretty quiet year for DC. It didn’t help that Joker: Folie à Deux turned out to be one of the year’s biggest box office bombs. But there’s a new hope on the horizon. James Gunn’s DCU is coming, and with it a brand new era for DC on the big and small screens. From Gunn’s hotly anticipated Superman movie to the return of shows like Peacemaker and The Sandman to the expansion of DC’s Absolute Universe, let’s break down the biggest and most important DC projects arriving in 2025. Superman Kicks Off the Live-Action DCU Compared to 2023, which saw the release of no fewer than four films set in the now-defunct DC Extended Universe, 2025 is definitely smaller in scope. Just like with 2024’s Joker: Folie à...
Marvel Rivals developer NetEase has issued an apology to disgruntled players who it unfairly banned for cheating. In a post on Discord, NetEase admitted it had mistakenly flagged as cheaters some who were playing in compatibility layer programs, even though they were not using cheating software. This, unfortunately, resulted in false bans, although NetEase failed to say how many. “We sincerely apologize for this situation and want to assure you that we do not and will not ban players who are playing fairly and without cheating,” NetEase said. The developer said it had made a list of affected players and lifted their bans. “We have identified the specific reasons behind these false bans and have compiled a list of affected players,”...
Call of Duty players are flooding to Activision’s privacy support page after a YouTuber showcased a method of finding out their hidden skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) rating. For years, SBMM has been the hottest of topics within the Call of Duty community, with some proclaiming it ruins the experience, others saying it helps level the competitive multiplayer playing field. High-skilled Call of Duty players often bemoan SBMM for chucking them into what they call “sweaty” lobbies full of similarly high-skilled players. All the while, Activision has kept players’ skill rating hidden from them, forcing them to speculate about where they might sit compared to others and how it fluctuates from game to game. However, popular Call of Duty...
There were some incredible games released this year, and we wanted to know which you thought was the best of the best. So with our partners at Truth, we picked 64 of 2024’s best games, put them in a head-to-head tournament, and gave you the power to vote for your favorites. After six rounds of voting and more than 1 million votes in all, one game reigned supreme as champion: Black Myth: Wukong. An action game from developer Game Science, Black Myth: Wukong is inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. You play as the Destined One, an anthropomorphic monkey based on Sun Wukong from the novel. You wield a staff with different stances, have access to several magic spells, and can transform into enemies after defeating...
When it came to the last season's model, the Stealth 700 Gen 2s, my thoughts were very much in line with my learned US contemporary’s 8/10. They certainly weren't a perfect pair of cans right out of the box (with two medium-sized faults needing to be zapped via firmware updates), but those bugbears aside, my pair served me aural delights for ages. I’ve been keen to see (read: hear) how the envelope could be pushed further with a Gen 3. This new revision has some big memory foam cups to fill, though—the Stealth 700 Gen 2 wasn’t quite the apex of high-fidelity ear candy in 2020, but at the time it was Turtle Beach’s best headset to date by a considerable margin. Have these Gen 3s spent four years of an off-season raising the benchmark...
Call of Duty publisher Activision has confirmed plans to charge players extra to earn the best Squid Game crossover event rewards in a first for the series. In a blog post, Activision detailed the Squid Game event, which includes a Red Light, Green Light limited-time multiplayer mode for Black Ops 6, as well as new operator bundles based on characters from the hugely popular Netflix show for use across Black Ops 6 and Warzone. One controversial addition, however, is the new Squid Game Event Pass, which includes a free reward track and a premium reward track. Activision detailed all the rewards included in both tracks (the premium track includes the coveted Front Man Operator skin), and confirmed the premium track costs 1,100 COD...
The Fantastic Four are coming to Marvel Rivals, its developer has confirmed. In a first-look image, below, we see Marvel Rivals’ take on Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and Thing, as well as the robot H.E.R.B.I.E. The superhero team are sitting in the Fantasticar, and we also see the Baxter Building in the background. Marvel Rivals developer NetEase tweeted to say a trailer showing Fantastic Four is set for January 6 at 8am PST. One early question fans have is whether H.E.R.B.I.E. is playable alongside the main Fantastic Four members. We'll find out soon enough. It's worth noting that the Fantastic Four image also includes what look like bats flying in a sky lit by a blood-red moon. Could this be a tease...
Ubisoft’s PC woes have continued into 2025, with the generally much-loved Assassin’s Creed Origins suffering a review-bomb campaign on Steam after a Windows PC update rendered it unplayable for some. In November, Microsoft confirmed that Windows 11 version 24H2 accidentally killed Ubisoft games such as Star Wars Outlaws, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and more. The issue was so bad that Microsoft updated its support website to reveal it has placed a temporary block on Windows 11 for users with those games installed. "After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, you might encounter issues with some Ubisoft games," Microsoft said at the time. "These games might become unresponsive while starting, loading or during active gameplay. "In some...
Half-Life 3 rumor and speculation is in overdrive after the voice actor behind G-Man issued a cryptic tweet teasing some sort of news for 2025. In full G-Man mode, Mike Shapiro tweeted a narrated video in which he marked the end of 2024 by teasing “unexpected surprises” for this year, alongside the tags #Valve, #Halflife, #GMan, and #2025. “Another year already," Shapiro said in the tweet. "Good to see and hear from some many of you. May the next quarter century deliver as many unexpected surprises, hmm, as did the millennium’s first. Then again time is fluid like music. See you in the new year!” That’s pretty vague, but as many fans have pointed out, this is Shapiro’s first non-reply tweet since he congratulated Valve on the...
The boss of Black Myth: Wukong developer Game Science has pointed the finger at the Xbox Series S over the lack of an Xbox version of the game. In a post on Chinese social media website Weibo, Game Science co-founder and CEO Feng Ji celebrated PC and PlayStation 5 action game Black Myth: Wukong’s Game of the Year win at the 2024 Steam awards, and in doing so lamented the lack of an Xbox version of the game, which he blamed on optimization trouble with the Xbox Series S. “The only thing missing is the Xbox,” he said, per machine learning translation, “which somehow feels a bit wrong, but that 10GB of shared memory — without years of optimisation experience — is really hard to make work.” That’s a reference to the Xbox Series S’ power...
In 2017, Brendan Greene (aka “PlayerUnknown”) pioneered the Battle Royale genre of games with the early access release of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The game has since gone on to become a massive hit, spawning countless more games like it, including some of the most successful games of all time. Next year, 2025, Greene wants to pioneer something new. He wants to make a metaverse. No, not the one you’re thinking of. Greene doesn’t think those count as actual metaverses. “I hesitate to talk about this, because it's just such a dirty word, but I want to build a metaverse because I don't think anyone else is,” he tells IGN. “I think everyone's building IP bubbles that might talk to each other at some stage in the future, maybe if...
Welcome back, my friend and fellow bargain hunter, to 2025! Here's to another lucrative year of me hooking you up (almost daily) on nothing but the finest wares worth buying. Case in point: it's the FINAL day of the Steam Winter sale, and I've located the last gasp of great deals worth grabbing. So let's get amongst it! Meanwhile, in My God You're Aging News, it's a thin list for birthdays to celebrate. Nevertheless, I happily baked a 10-shaped cake for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, a WiiU classic. This was basically a minigame found within Super Mario 3D World that was red-mushroomed up into a full title experience. Obviously, old mate Shroom Head didn't have the same abilities as Muzza, but he can pick up items to clock familiar...
Sony has announced the PlayStation Plus monthly games for January 2025 will be Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered, and The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe. As detailed on PlayStation.Blog, all three of these games will be available on January 7 for PlayStation Plus members, with Suicide Squad arriving on PS5, Need for Speed racing to PS4, and Stanley Parable dropping on PS5 and PS4. The big addition here is Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, especially after developer Rocksteady just recently confirmed it will be pulling the plug on new content after Season 4 arrives this month. Despite that, there is a lot to look forward to, including a playable Deathstroke, an offline mode, and all the...

It will, of course, take full advantage of current gen hardware to flood your screen with enemies that you can plow through while yelling the titular battlecry, “DIE, NASTY WARRIORS!” It'll be available on PS5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC. If you prefer to make...

I’m starting to feel like Charlie Brown from The Peanuts comics, and Microsoft is the Lucy who keeps pulling the football away right as I go to kick it. Every year I write this feature, and every year I say that this looks like The Year™ where everything comes together for Xbox. Last year, in fact, I specifically said, “Looking ahead to 2024, that positive momentum looks set to continue and, with any luck, snowball.” Microsoft arguably didn’t live up to that for the first 10.5 months of the year, with only the visually-full-but-gameplay-empty Hellblade 2 dropping in May after many years of waiting. But to the big-spending publisher’s credit, it did end the year extremely strong, dropping three exclusive bangers in a row: STALKER 2...

After 12 months of big hitters such as Helldivers 2, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Dune: Part 2 and Shogun, it’s not unreasonable to consider 2024 a good year for pop culture. But the smooth always comes with the rough, and the past year really has been a rocky one for the things we love and the people who make them. From layoffs and studio closures to costly consoles, underwhelming adaptations and struggling sequels, these are the biggest disappointments in 2024. Gaming Industry Layoffs and Closures The games industry found itself facing a crisis in 2023 as many publishers and studios, both large and small, made scores of staff redundant in an effort to cut costs. But the pains of that year would be repeated in 2024, which has...
