Control was IGN’s Game of the Year in 2019 – and I was one of the many editors that voted for it – but even I was skeptical when Remedy, a studio known for telling great single-player stories in third-person games, announced it was doing a Control multiplayer game. That project turned out to be FBC: Firebreak, a three-player PvE first-person multiplayer shooter set six years after the events of Control. And in the hands-off demo I saw, it very quickly became clear that my skepticism was completely unwarranted. Firebreak is refreshingly original in an oversaturated space, delightfully weird amidst a sea of same-y military and/or sci-fi online shooters, and perhaps best of all, it doesn’t require a massive commitment like so many of its...

Fans quick to celebrate the reveal of a Microsoft Flight Simulator PlayStation Store page were left let down after it was discovered that the actual product is little more than “copycat shovelware.” Xbox and PlayStation fans gathered to discuss a potential port for the popular flight simulation game after Reddit user CreativeRaspberry314 shared Trophy information related to a potential PS4 and PS5 version earlier today. It would be exciting – if not somewhat unsurprising – to see Microsoft bring more Xbox titles to PlayStation fans, but the spotted store page isn’t officially related to Microsoft Flight Simulator in any way, shape, or form. “Sadly, this is just a copycat shovelware game,” one Reddit user added. “Straight up...

Ubisoft has activated the Animus once more, this time to take us back to Japan’s Sengoku Period. Assassin’s Creed Shadows features a number of historical figures from 1579, including Fujibayashi Nagato, Akechi Mitsuhide, and Yasuke – the African samurai who served Oda Nobunaga. As with the previous games in the series, these figures are woven into a story that combines fact with fiction to tell a tale of revenge, betrayal, and murder – including that time Yasuke had to kill everyone to gather enough XP to use a gold-tier weapon. Yes, Assassin’s Creed is historical fiction, and its whole MO has been finding gaps in the past that can be used to tell a science fiction conspiracy tale about a secret society that’s looking to take over the...

Assassin’s Creed Shadows day-one patch notes: This update brings various improvements and fixes, including: Players no longer getting stuck inside movable objects after dodging forward and interacting with them in kofuns Fix for procedural weapons being removed incorrectly when selling items Adjustments to prevent players from going out of bounds when proning against objects Improved horse navigation, reducing issues with turning...
A new Ark: Survival Evolved expansion trailer from publisher Snail Games has been resoundingly condemned by the Ark community for being filled with evidence of appalling generative AI imagery. The trailer was released in the wake of Snail Games’ GDC announcement of its “in-house developed new expansion map, Ark: Aquatica”. The studio describes the expansion as a non-canonical side story to Ark in “an ambitious underwater setting featuring 95% of gameplay taking place beneath the surface.” “This is disgusting and you should be ashamed of yourselves,” wrote Irish YouTuber Syntac in response to the trailer. This statement from the popular Ark-oriented video creator, who has over 1.9 million subscribers, is currently the top comment on...
There are a lot of fine details that go into making a life simulator fun but also reflective of the real world. You have to balance customizability and creative freedom with just enough rules to make choices feel realistic and challenging, and then invisibly weave those decisions together in a satisfying way. (It turns out recreating life is hard – sorry for all the flak, Dr. Frankenstein.) Yet, despite the difficulties, it’s a task developer Krafton has taken a respectable stab at with inZOI based on what I’ve played of its Early Access launch version so far. Its beautiful, realistic aesthetic makes a striking first impression, and the ambitious simulator systems underneath initially result in some impressive harmony. However, as I...
Split Fiction players have stumbled upon a secret level that fans have dubbed “Laser Hell,” and it’s so difficult that Hazelight is rewarding the first pair who managed to beat it. Co-op fans found yet another reason to celebrate the studio’s latest cooperative story after content creators E1uM4y and Sharkov shared their successful run on Chinese social media platform Bilibili. Their three-minute video showcases not only what a successful run looks like but also the hellish tasks that await inside it. Split Ficition’s Laser Hell level is a gauntlet of demanding platforming challenges that see players dodging up and around a series of laser rooms, but it is doable — and there’s a special video for those who see it through to the end...
Thanks in no small part to his role in Marvel Rivals, it's safe to say Jeff the Land Shark is one of Marvel's most popular new characters to come along in recent years. If you're the type of collector with a Jeff-shaped hole in your Marvel figure lineup, Diamond Select Toys has you covered with the Marvel Animated-Style Jeff the Land Shark Resin Statue. Check out the slideshow gallery below for an exclusive look at this adorable new collectible: First revealed at New York Toy Fair earlier this month, this Jeff statue is the latest addition to DST's long-running Marvel Animated line of statues. But whereas most of these pieces have been based on the artwork of Skottie Young, Jeff is instead inspired by the work of the Japanese...
Shigeru Ishiba, the Prime Minister of Japan, responded to a question about Assassin’s Creed Shadows today during an official government conference meeting. While some reports have indicated that Prime Minister Ishiba hit out at Ubisoft’s Feudal Japan-set game and its maker Ubisoft over concerns about its depictions of shrines, the truth is less controversial. IGN ran the question and answer via our colleagues at IGN Japan to get not only an accurate translation but some context that helps us understand what’s actually happening here. IGN has also asked Ubisoft for comment. For background, Ubisoft has apologized a number of times in the run up to Shadows’ much-delayed launch over aspects of the game and its marketing that upset some...
Hollow Knight fans have been waiting quite a while for news about its sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong. The wait has been so unbearable that even a casual mention, like the one Xbox dropped in a recent ID@Xbox post, can ignite the fires of those holding out for a 2025 drop. On Xbox Wire, ID@Xbox director Guy Richards shared a post detailing how over $5 billion have been paid to independent developers through the program. It mostly goes over the success of past ID@Xbox launches, ranging from Phasmophobia and Balatro to Another Crab's Treasure and Neva. Then, in a portion about upcoming games, we get the name-drop: This mostly confirms that Hollow Knight: Silksong will launch sometime between me typing this, right now, and the end of...
Since its inception, the Silent Hill franchise has largely unfolded its grim and murky narratives within the borders of the United States of America. Indeed, last year’s Silent Hill 2 remake did a fantastic job of ramming home the effectiveness of its setting, with protagonist James Sunderland traipsing around the titular resort town within the […] Continue reading...
Mortal Kombat 1’s T-1000 update has added the iconic Terminator 2 villain to the fighting game, and with it revealed how the developers at NetherRealm have handled its liquid metal form in the face of the series’ trademark Fatalities. The gory fighting game franchise is famous for slicing and dicing characters in all sorts of gruesome ways, ripping out organs and even complete skeletons. Some characters tear the very soul from their hapless foe’s body, or break bones every which way possible. But none of this should work on the T-1000, right? The T-1000 is made entirely out of a liquid metal called mimetic polyalloy, meaning it can reform into any shape it touches of the approximate size. And that’s exactly how the T-1000 works in...
In 2012, Assassin’s Creed 3 director Alex Hutchinson called out people on the internet for suggesting the most “boring” future settings for the series. “The three most wanted [settings for Assassin’s Creed] are WWII, feudal Japan and Egypt,” he explained at the time, adding “They’re kind of the three worst settings for an AC game.” Hutchinson later clarified his statement, saying “the point I was trying to make was that in the broad strokes and scale of history, that’s a theme that’s been well-mined in video games.” He’s not wrong and since he made his most recent comments, Ghost of Tsushima, Rise of the Ronin, Neo and more have all shone a spotlight on feudal Japan. Fast-forward to 2025 and Assassin’s Creed is finally going to one of...
Monster Hunter Wilds is a smash hit across the globe, with an incredible 8 million copies sold in just three days. In the U.S., Capcom’s action game is the best-selling game of 2025 so far, and it’s PC in particular that’s dominating. According to Circana, not only was Monster Hunter Wilds the best-selling game of February, but launch month dollar sales more than doubled the total Monster Hunter: Rise achieved during its March 2021 debut. As you’d expect, Monster Hunter Wilds was the best-selling game of February across PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam. But here’s the interesting stat: Steam accounted for more than half of Monster Hunter Wilds’ total dollar sales. That's despite some high-profile performance issues on PC that have led to...
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has come to dominate entertainment with its interconnected series of films and TV shows that all tie together to form a long-running, cohesive narrative. Marvel video games, however, do not exist in the same universe, telling stories entirely separate and unrelated to each other. Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man games, for example, have nothing to do with Eidos-Montreal’s Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Similarly, upcoming Marvel games such as Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, Marvel's Wolverine, and Marvel’s Blade, have no connective tissue. But there was once an idea at Disney to create a Marvel Gaming Universe that would do for Marvel video games what the MCU went on to do for Marvel movies and TV shows. So...
Palworld has a big new update that adds crossplay across all platforms among many other new features. Update v0.5.0 also lets players store Pal data in the Global Palbox and transfer Pals between worlds. A new storage system has 10 times the capacity of the regular Palbox. Not only can guild members access it, but it can be used as a personal storage with private settings. Elsewhere, you can now change your character’s appearance without affecting armor stats (transmog), there’s a photo mode, blueprint upgrading, and dedicated servers for Mac, among other changes detailed in the patch notes below. Developer Pocketpair said it’s working on adding dedicated servers for the PlayStation 5 version and will release them at some point in...
Ubisoft has confirmed the global release times for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Unlike previous games in the series and indeed Ubisoft games generally, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has a unified, actual release date. You cannot pay more for early access. Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ release date on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S is 12am local time on March 20, but it’s worth noting there are separate release times for the game on PC depending on whether you’re getting it on Steam or Ubisoft’s own platform, Ubi Connect. Pre-load is already available on Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 5, and PC. There is of course enormous pressure on Assassin's Creed Shadows to do well for Ubisoft after a number of delays and last year's Star Wars...
It has been check notes nearly a whole decade since the last offline single-player Fallout title graced our hands, eyeballs and ear holes. Exceptional standalone modding efforts aside, it still surprises me that given the creatively fertile width and breadth of the Fallout franchise, the series hasn’t properly ventured outside of North America. For folks […] Continue reading...
Hazelight director Josef Fares has taken the time to clear the air about his studio’s relationship with EA while promising that the It Takes Two and Split Fiction developer is already working on its next game. The creative behind the infamous “f*** the Oscars” line spoke about Hazelight’s past, present, and future during an interview on the Friends Per Second podcast. For those who enjoyed Split Fiction, the studio’s most recent critically acclaimed co-op adventure, he says the team is already putting some early ideas together. “For me, personally, every time a game is out, I’m kind of done with it. I’m kind of like, ‘OK, here’s the next thing,’” Fares explained when talking about his mentality after releasing Split Fiction. “This has...
It’s wild that it took almost 20 years and dozens of games for the biggest stealth action series around to finally bend towards feudal Japan. Assassin's Creed Shadows makes the most of that theme, with a great pair of shinobi and samurai heroes sharing center stage that are well-written and fun to skulk through giant castles or wade into vicious battles with. Besides the setting, the bulk of the changes this time focus on making smaller tweaks to well-established systems, such as less cluttered maps and skill trees, while also doubling down on things that really worked in 2023’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage, like the more focused and tougher combat that accompanies its better paced main quests. It’s not a perfect reset, as imbalances and...
The hotly anticipated Half-Life 2 RTX launches its demo today, March 18, and IGN sat down with its developers to discuss how they reimagined Valve’s 20-year-old masterpiece using Nvidia's RTX Remix tech, and debate the concern from some fans that it negatively impacts the original’s atmosphere. The modding team Orbifold Studios used RTX Remix to modernize Half-Life 2, adding full ray tracing, remastered assets, and DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation. It is free DLC for Half-Life 2 owners, and its demo is out now on Steam. However, not everyone in the Half-Life community believes RTX Remix actually improves upon Half-Life 2. Various complaints based on early gameplay footage revolve around RTX Remix’s new lighting, which some have said...
One of the oldest discourses in the gaming space has circled around again: the question of whether big single-player games are "dead." This time, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke, who spearheaded development on the blockbuster hit single-player game Baldur's Gate 3, has weighed in on the matter with a firm position. Posting on X/Twitter, Vincke noted it's "that time of the year again when big single-player games are declared dead." His response: "Use your imagination. They're not. They just have to be good." It would be hard to deny Vincke knows exactly what he's talking about. Larian built up its reputation game over game, producing stellar CRPGs like Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 before taking the reins on...
Baldur's Gate 3 is a year-and-a-half old now, and we're still happily muddling through our second, third, seventh, 10th playthroughs. But with developer Larian choosing to step away from the series, that leaves Hasbro to sort out what it's going to do with Baldur's Gate in the future. Fortunately, it sounds like it won't be too long until we hear at least something about what's going on for the franchise. Speaking to IGN at the Game Developers Conference this week, SVP of digital games at Hasbro Dan Ayoub let on that with Larian moving on, Hasbro has "a lot of people very interested in Baldur's Gate." "We're kind of working out our plans for the future and what we're going to be doing with that. And actually, in pretty short order...
